Just yesterday me and my husband were talking about this. We now live in the city which is very busy, noisy, lots of cars and not a good place for little kids. If we can, we would love to move to somewhere outside in the country (if that is possible in Holland..., in a lovely old house!

My dream home is the one I bought this past summer. A 1937 stucco with just the right bit of architectural charm without being the least bit fussy.
Oh gosh, definitely a beautiful, large old home from the 1870s-1901 with lots of original features. I would love to incorporate modern conveinences but stay sympathetic to the era.

Can I have two? My husband and I are both architects with different and many dreams. I would love to have the peace and quiet of a small rustic farm house decorated in sparse modern in New Mexico, juxtaposed with a beautiful old traditional brownstone in Chicago, luxurious and cozy.
I'm in the middle of redecorating after some major construction, and this book would be so inspiring!
I would say my dream home is an old and lovely place brought into modernity with beautiful bones and simple clean lines. Most important is lots of beautiful light! Big windows with light pouring across wide old wood floors. It good be an old greek revival , federal or even a barn. OOoh maybe a barn with the back side opened up with all windows so the rolling hills on the back side seem to be framed by the big old wooden framing. So hard to pick one. I would take any of the homes pictured from this book too! Lovely.
My dream is of a modest old country home who's windows showcase nature's seasons, who's worn floors have lost count of the family and friends that have walked their boards, who's walls could tell many a story and whose beautiful old kitchen table is truly it's heart. :)
We're currently living in an 86 year old house that needs to have a whole bunch of bad renovating undone. Our first project is to get this house done, live here a few years and then sell. But I have my eye on an enormous 1880's grande dame down the street-- crusty with balconies and dormer windows and porches-- THAT'S my someday house. It's currently broken up into 5 apartments and will need to be totally gutted-- fun!
Oh, dreaming here....I'd like an old home (brownstone), with original details, a wide planked wooden floor that creaks in the night, with a front stoop over looking a busy city sidewalk that is steps from a great park/playground. A teensy yard in the back that gets juuuust enough sun to keep a few flowers alive. And two bathrooms (I have two daughters...need I say more) and my own washer/dryer. Yes, the last two parts are mundane. But oh, to dream....

I'm an Army wife living overseas with my husband in government housing where there are many rules on what we can & cannot do to make the house our own. i have heard such good things about this book, and the decwhore in me needs it badly...
of course i have dreams about restoring a house somewhere...the location and type is ever changing..a new york or paris pied a terre to a country house in um....the country duh. one day i will though and lets just say this book will be a good starting point to solidify the where's and what's of my big renovation in the future.

I was just flipping through this book at the store, looks amazing. As for my dream home... I would love a fixer upper. I am not particular about the kind just one that needs love. Although since its mostly up to my hubby I am sure we will always be in new construction.

I live in my dream house. It's a center entrance colonial. It has hardwood floors, plaster walls, a slate foyer. We live in a wonderful neighborhood and close to a fantastic school. Slow but sure I am fixing it up to my style. Traditional with a twist is what I call it. Mostly traditional with a fun or unexpected element thrown in.
If I were to move from this house I would love a big old farmhouse in the country with a front porch. I would sit on a swing and knit all day. Though that is a VERY big dream with 6&7 year old girls!

I want a red-brick federal style 3 story nestled in a historic district somewhere. Right now we're in Upstate NY, but I'd love to find this home in Marietta, GA or Chattanooga, TN or somewhere down home!
Oddly, I have two different dream homes. One is an older home that would be restored with some modern amenities yet keeping with its traditional tone. The other would be a home built and designed of entirely green materials. I suppose in a way, I could combine the two - restoring an older home with green in mind.
My dreamhouse is a little cottage on a lake or the ocean, with shutters and a front porch looking over the water.

We live in a city (Boston) and I love that our city already has oodles and oodles of charm and personality. What I haven't seen in apartments here is a cozy ski lodge feel. My dream would be to take an old Beacon Hill brownstone and fashion the already amazing features that you find in the older homes to feel like a ski lodge. Great hardwood flooring, a grand fireplace, lots of open space, vaulted ceilings. Ah I could go on...

I dream of an original craftsman home with beautiful, thick trim around... everything! I love the built-ins, the clean lines, and the dark, muted colors. I want columns on my front porch & on half-walls to my dining room, with William Morris wallpaper. Sigh.

This is the question my husband and I endlessly debate (he's finishing his Ph.D. right now, so we've had a few years to think about what we'll do with the rest of our lives...). We've decided that we'd love to do a post-doc in the city for a year or so, but we'd like to end up with lots of land--a farmhouse with an established orchard would be just right.
This book makes me think of our first home, which was a cottage-style postwar home in an AWESOME Minneapolis neighborhood. Drive down the streets--under a canopy of massive oak trees--and you can just picture all the GIs with their families in 1948. :) Coved ceilings, crystal doorknobs, ceramic tile bathroom, oak hardwood floors, stone fireplace, picket fence. Perfection.

ONE dream home? Hmmmm, too hard. Like my decorating styles I have many. I would love a brownstone in the city, a cottage at the beach (complete with screen doors, shutters, and outdoor shower) and a beautiful cabin in the woods while a huge part of me would love an aging stone farmhouse in the Cognac region of France. I have lots of housing dreams - an apartment in Paris near the Jardin de Luxembourg, complete with one of those black metal scrollwork railings on the balcony...a farmhouse in Vermont with steep eaves and a big front porch...But perhaps my ultimate dreams is the very first house my DH and I bought, a sweet little row house in New Castle, Delaware. I still have dreams about walking into that house.

i live in the rear building of a carriage house in the west village which was built in the 1800s. if i could live anywhere, i'd stay right here, but i'd renovate and take over the other apts in the building because mine is only 200 square feet! talk about living small!

I love your blog! I check it everyday for great decorating tips. We are just buying our first home and this is all so new to me that I take all of the ideas that I can get! I want my home to be unique, each room with great style, I just don't know where to start. This book would be a great jumping off point. My old house (1925 bungalow) is a love-....(hate is a strong word) - perhaps labor of love with a healthy share of frustration. Some renovation projects have been planned but many have not - and I find more and more time passes before I can make any decisions with projects (front bathroom had no sink for 2 years!)- I need inspiration to replace my exasperation. My husband and I are currently doing a top to bottom renovation of a 1930s bungalow a few blocks from the texas shore. It has been an awesome experience introducing modern touches in this character-filled house.

I love traditional, and I love modern, I live in a house built in 1916 and I see so much potential if only I had the time and resources.
We have a century old brick twin right outside the city with secret places and tons of charm. I love it, but it is work. But my dream home would have to be the farmhouse. I have two dream houses! My first one is a home in the style of the one from the movie "Something's Gotta Give". I love the color palette and how it's right on the beach. My other dream house is like the one from "Practical Magic", it's old, full of character. Amazing wood floors, a beautiful garden, and a kitchen to die for.

I have a heartbreaking story about my dreamhouse...
A few years ago, my husband and I were considering buying a vacation home in Margate, New Jersey. We looked at a house there that didn't "quite belong" but both fell madly in love with it. It had been on the market for a long time. It was built by the same architect that built Betsy Ross's house and had many of the orginal features. It had a gorgeous tin roof, original windows, orginal floors,wood beams on the celings, and all of the door knobs and hinges were handmade and intact. Incredible. We finally made the decision and called the realtor back to put in an offer...and it had sold a few days before! We still vacation in NJ, and everytime I pass it a small tear rolls down my cheek :) Maybe it will come back to us someday. xo

Growing up in NOLA I've always dreamed of a grand home on the parade route portion of St. Charles Avenue.
While that still holds true, I'd love to build a Greek revival on the Chesapeake Bay which is closer to DC. Fondly called, Chesapeake Hall, the long drive leading to the front door opens to a centerhall open on the back to sweeping views of inlet waterways and bobbing crab traps.
I love English cottages. I already live in one of sorts (albeit not in England), but ideally I'd like one with more space and leaded windows. And in a climate that was more kind to cottage gardens!
The house I'm currently restoring (and have been for the last ten years!) is pretty close to my dream house. It's an unpretentious 1910 classic three-story with a front porch and tall old windows. In my daydreams, the ceilings would be a foot higher, the fireplace would be more interesting, and the whole things would just a leeetle bit bigger, with a generous front hall and a mudroom! Oh, and a much bigger yard.
Renovated Row House for sure. I have a friend who grew up in a beautifully renovated and decorated Brownstone in Brooklyn just block from the water. I still think of that home as my dream home- I was always jealous of her family's incredible style! Such expansive spaces and hallways, the whole house just screamed luxury. Thanks!

I already own my dream home, but it isn't quite living up to its potential just yet. It's a 1905 brick folk Victorian. We bought it totally gutted and have been doing everything (framing, electrical, plumbing, flooring...EVERYTHING) ourselves, so it's taking some time. We live in a small town, so I'm imagining it as a slightly more sophisticated version of a farmhouse - something homey and comfortable. All the modern conveniences, but true to the age and style of the home.
I am a country girl at heart... so for me it's a farmhouse with modern touches. My father and I renovated the house my great grandfather was born in (originally constructed in 1856)... I have lots of pics if you're interested in seeing how we've decorated (we used lots of your ideas!)

My dream home is in the town where I grew up and ever I since I got my drivers license when I was 16 I have detoured down its street to see it! I love this house. My husband and I moved recently, and before we left, I took tons of pictures of it (I'm sure the owners thought I was a stalker!) But, I may not get the chance to buy it one day so I figured I better have good pictures so that I can build myself an exact replica!

I'd love to restore a big 1870s Italianate place--but one that's had the plumbing and wiring updated in the last 25 years....
we're currently working on our 1900 brick twin in the burbs. one day i would love to have an 1700 or 1800s farmhouse in the country - complete with a barn of course!

I would love that beautiful book. Any home with character would make me happy, an old farmhouse would probably fit my lifestyle best.
I think that an old house restored to it's initial glory would be my dream. I love old things that remind me of a time when quality- rather than quantity- was always the goal.
Okay, here is my dream house (today anyhow) Either a larger bungalow or a classic four square in a historic district. Updated but with really great mouldings and built ins... a butler's pantry, I have to have a butler's pantry. And, the perfect place to put our Christmas tree every year. Needs to have a front porch and at least one fireplace. And great lighting.... oh I could go on and on... I would really love to win!

My dream home is a large 1920's era craftman home. I just love their large porches and low steeped roofs. They look so sturdy, cozy and inviting.
When I was younger, I never thought I'd want to live in the country. I loved the idea of a tiny apartment in the city. My husband has convinced me of a home on an acre+. I dream of restoring a barn. We'll have chicken of course!
I dream of renovating a historic home in our downtown area. I love the charm of old homes, but really love the conveniences of an updated kitchen and bathrooms!
my dream home would be old and full of original features... but seeing as my husband doesn't really like old houses, i can still dream of building a new house with tons of vintage details and charm.
Although I don't think I could ever quite convince my husband to do that (move to the city and restore a home) it's a secret dream of mine ... and maybe this book will help convince him.
But I'd be equally as happy to discover a gem of an old farmhouse and restore it too!

I've always wanted to restore an old house. I grew up in an old colonial, and I loved watching the way my mother mixed new furniture with the house's architectural details.
I'm still kicking myself for not pushing harder to buy the 1895 Queen Anne that I fell in love with (and now we've ended up in a development!)...Oh well, next time, when there're more funds to do an old beauty justice!
i love details & character in a home. i think my dream home would be farm-house-ish. feel lived in and loved on but still have stunning (yet worn) details. we recently purchased our first home and it has very little character on its own. maybe this book could help give me some diys ideas.

I would love to sit down and pore over this in a couple of weeks after the craziness in my life calms down.
I would love to do two renos in my lifetime, although I don't have realistic dreams of that happening! I would love to do a metropolitan home first and then, because my heart is always in the country (being that I was raised on a farm), I think an old beat-up farm house with great bones is just up my alley. :)

My first house was a cookie cutter suburban nightmare. I'm currently in a 1960s ramshackle. I would love to restore a farmhouse in the country or live in a saltbox. Dreams . . . someday they might come true if I work on them.

Not sure exactly the "look" of my dream house, as it keeps evolving over the years. I do know it's in the city rather than the country and it would have mid-century modern details.
I dream of a big old Victorian in San Francisco! I would de-frill the inside and go funky modern with it, but leave the gingerbread details on the exterior. I currently own a little rambler about 1.5 hours south of my favorite city, so maybe some day! SarahV

ooh, where do I start... I'd love to renovate a tuscan villa, or an old apartment in a big cit and discover the stories of people who lived in the apartment over the years, but i think i'd mostly love to find an old house on a large property and turn it into something great! great giveaway!!

When I dream of a house to restore I think of England. I would love to buy a house in the small country town my great grandmother left to come to America. My mother is her only descendant and I would love to fix up a house to holiday in and search for long lost distant relatives. And the salvage yards in England... I drool over them from here in the States already!
I think I would go with a new build with classic details.
I would love a brownstone in the city on a tree lined street with all the original moldings and floors but modern and vintage furniture mixed in.
