Wallpaper in the Kitchen

Wipeable wallpaper can be such a fun addition to a kitchen! I think this is an especially great solution if you don't love your kitchen, but a reno is not in the budget. Paint your cabinets (probably something more neutral - off-white/gray/black) and then wallpaper the walls - easy and much less expensive than a full renovation.

My grandmother used wallpaper i her kitchen. Goes to show you everything seems to make it's way back around.

I love how wallpaper is making a comeback. The prints are so pretty, now. I can't get over that one toile one that's hung on the ceiling, too. That takes talent! You always find the best inspiration pics. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, I would love to do this, if my kitchen was enclosed or had a stopping point. I adore the David Hicks Vase wallpaper...been looking to use that somewhere for a couple years!

I never thought I would love wallpaper in the kitchen but there are a few on there that I would take in a minute!
The first is charming , the 7th is great, modern and clean looking, I just love that wallpaper in the 8th photo, yellow Chinese, perfecto , the touch of blue wallpaper in the 10th is lovely, and I just love the butterflies !
I am a convert now :)

Wow I LOVE some of these kitchens! I did Wallpaper in my kitchen and I LOVE it. It adds a lot of fun and helps you not notice the small imperfections of an older kitchen.

I know that you think that this is a good solution, but it screams 70's to me and trust, me that was not a good era for kitchens. I just can't see it. It took me forever to break away from wallpaper in the kitchen followed by several years of faux painting techniques including (gasp) sponge painting. Now I am loving my cleanly painted walls in an Aztec Gold and my Robin's Egg blue ceiling. But what am I...certainly not a professional in the decorating department...just someone who has lived through it all!

whenever I think of wallpaper in the kitchen, it just reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen and my mom's kitchen when I was a child. so retro...

The wallpaper in # 4 has been taking up room and board in my brain . It is such a happy paper. Don't even get me started on the Gingham shade in #5:)

I am going to add wallpaper to my kitchen any day now! I am over the moon excited for the space to be finished! You always have the greatest images thanks!

What a great roundup! I would love to do this in my kitchen. We will eventually renovate but it's far out and we have no backsplash right now. It's so hard to clean!

Danielle said...

Oh yeah...I'm diggin' all of these images. Actually I'm trying to create something similar in my kitchen with stencils though! Thanks for sharing these lovely images!!!

My goodness, these are incredible. Makes me want to paper *every* room!

What a great round up of pictures. My absolute favorite picture is the third!!!

I love wallpaper and these are all lovely. The second one from Lonny (black wisteria paper) would look a lot better though if it wasn't hung upside down. But even a mistake looks good!

Love this! That yellow chinoroise paper in the white kitchen is perfection to me. Great round up!! Oh, if only I owned.

I have always LOVED Tori Mellot's tiny green and yellow kitchen from donimno (blogged about her here: http://style-edition.squarespace.com/blog/2010/10/26/inspiring-design-tori-mellot.html)

A store near me has the yellow wallpaper in the 4th picture -- any idea what it is or where to find it or anything similar? I think it's so fun!

Beautiful round-up, Jenny! I LOVE the white kitchen with the yellow pattered wallpaper and white & black trellis roman shades!

Jenny at LGN said...

The yellow pattern in the fourth picture (same as the blue pattern further down) is David Hicks' The Vase by Clarence House. So great, right?!

I think it would be great but as an accent I think. Some of the pics made me a bit dizzy (i.e. the black and white kitchen). I do however love that color is bring introduced into kitchens in different ways outside of European or painted cabinets.

I love the print in the third picture! When we buy a home I'm definitely wallpapering at least one room. I just love the extra depth you get using pattern on the wall! Most of my clients have been shying away from wallpaper (feels too permanent) but hopefully one will step up soon!

elizabeth / sophisticated pie said...

I wasn't sure about this until I saw the 3rd and 4th photos. Those plus a couple of others (the navy and white paper) have sold me on this idea!!

I am obsessed with wallpaper! Great post!! Now, can you tell me where to find stylish vinyl or oil cloth fabric to make seat cushions out of, as I have 2 little boys??? And wipe able place mats as well, that are not $20 -$25 a mat. Thanks!!!

Great collection of kitchens! What a great way to renovate on a budget. :) Painted cabinets and papered walls can go a long way in changing the entire look of the space.

I love the 'Domino' gold wallpaper - really dramatic. A bit like carptet, I never thought that wallpaper would work so well in a kitchen.

Darby said...

DO you have a source for the first kitchen, looked at Country Living but couldn't find it?!

Well that was just a fabulous and a half!

I've had this (mmmmmmm, outdated?) black-and-white damask wallpaper that I've been dying to stick on my laundry walls, right above some beadboard. It's something that would help me love my kitchen rather than wish the laundry appliances weren't in the only space I have to use for a pantry. I'd love that little folding doors nook if I'd just put the wallpaper in!

That's it.

It's gonna happen. Probably in three weekends though, because I simply can't make the Hubster put the paper up on his birthday weekend (this weekend), and I work the following Saturday. Ah, it's still gonna happen in three weeks. Woot!

Sara said...

Thanks for the sources! As wallpaper is well into its comeback, it's always nice to hear favorite sources! I love the allover look in a photo, but it also seems like a nice idea to do in a more limited way for a quick punch of style.

I LOVE everything about this post and the pics. I purchased a beautiful Thibaut, coral and blue wallpaper for a kitchen that I bought 3 years ago. Soon after, we were +1 in the family department and had to rent out the space. I never was able to "experience" the dazzling w.p. :(. I've just lived vicariously and remember why I have it tucked away for the right house! Thanks for the post ;).

A Dance With Grace said...

And I also love everything about Trisha's comment!!

It's a great idea. Not for me personally in the kitchen but for some that would work brilliantly.

So many drool-worthy rooms!! I love the look when it's done properly (as with most things in life :P) and these are all gorgeous!

I love this idea!!

I have a wallpaper question, and you are the only person I can imagine knowing the answer. I love the wallpaper in the "entry way" of the home in the Sprint commercial where the mom is telling the family that her parents are moving in. It's large scale, verticle, maybe magnolia-esque. Do you have any idea what it is? I've looked through the limited sources I know of and haven't found it.

Thanks!

hi! i love these images. we are considering wallpaper in our kitchen remodel--how do I know if it will be waterproof?

Kathy Carbone said...

I like that wallpaper on the sink with tile works. My sister's home in St. Pete has black and white wallpapers, too. It's so lovely and elegant.

Sarah Jane said...

Loving the first one and the shiny cabinets with butterfly wallpaper. Gorgeous! Can't wait to redo our kitchen. Unfortunately it needs a LOT more than just wallpaper!

Annie said...

Any idea of how to do this if you wanted to go the stencil route? And in a kitchen with two trayed ceilings?

Jennifer Pribble said...

Coming to the conversation late, but...I cannot WAIT to take down the paper that is in my kitchen and everywhere in our 1920s house. It is a huge hassle. I yearn for painted walls!
