Knock-Off Sofas

I was looking through my bookmarks a few days ago and I re-stumbled across this company, Custom Sofa Design.

I am OBSESSED with this Kentwood Sofa, with a starting price at $799. So tempting! Wouldn't these be gorgeous in a pair, flanking a dramatic black fireplace?

Does anyone have any experience with this company? There are some testimonials here and some information about their construction.

Check out their other sofas. It seems like they are knocking off Crate & Barrel, Anthropologie, Pottery Barn and Room & Board with a lot of these styles. Prices are starting at $599:

  3. I would be a little weary since the photos almost seem like they were taken from other resources and just altered a bit...

  4. Do let us know if you happen to order one or a pair?
I really would love to have a pair flanking my fireplace!
We have a hand-me-down sofa that has been well loved, of course it was built like a tank, but that is how they made things 50 years ago.

  5. I'd be interested in knowing where they are made. One of the things I love about Room&Board is that their prices are actually quite reasonable and their products are made in the USA. If these guys are too, however, they will definitely give the bigger retailers a run for their money.

  6. oh my... those are wonderful and with a price starting so low... who could resist! thanks for posting!

  7. Wow! i wish i knew if someone has used this company before b/c the prices are insanely cheap!! especially for the styles that they offer.

  9. Wow, I was just looking for a couch and couldn't seem to find anything I liked (that was reasonable in price).... I love your blog for inspiration and you always seem to post about things that I am looking for at the time. So perfect timing on this. I may try it out. If I do, I will let you know :)

  12. I saw this review on Apartment Therapy. There are 13 or so customers. They seemed to either have a very positive or very negative experience.

  13. I got my sofa through custom sofa design and its amazing!! Don is the owner - and the reason he can get his prices so low is bc he works out of a storage unit - it seems sketchy -- but totally not at all! He did exactly what I wanted and my best friend also ordered a sofa from him too. I live in LA, and thats where he is based out of.

  19. i got my couches through this company. don is great and i went through the orange county branch. it was in laguna hills but now in mission viejo i believe. i got them almost 4 years ago and still great. i got two room & board couches for the price of one at the retail price. i got to chose the exact fabric and grade of fabric and even made a couple of custom changes to the design without an increase of price. there was a time line issue...took a couple of weeks longer than expected. overall love my sofas!

  20. considering that almost ALL furniture (from Mitchel Gold to Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn) is made by the same 5 or 6 manufacturers then it wouldn't surprise me that this place is able to get very similar products at a cheaper price.

  21. Greatest post ever!!! Thank you! I've wanted the Petrie sofa for so long from C&B. This is much more in my price range!! All of these are such beautiful options.

  24. I've used Don, too for interior design jobs. He's great and so far everything we've ordered has been exactly what we were looking to get.

  25. we ordered a couch for our studio and we love it! We were able to make any change we wanted and I ALWAYS want to make changes! I chose the legs, had the back tufted added nail trim and down stuffing and it was ready in THREE weeks!

love them, love the ability to make changes without any hassle. they even made a duplicate couch from the one I designed

  26. I actually ordered a few pieces from them that are in the making.

I'll let you know how things turn out

  30. I love this! Especially the upholstered beds that they have! I want one so bad!

  31. Oooh I'm loving that tufted turquoise one, 3rd from the bottom. Of course, I'd love to have any of those in my house. Great find!

  32. We have a similar place in Seattle that makes custom sofas. CouchSeattle. They knock off restoration hardware stuff like the Maxwell for half price. We have once couch from them and another on the way! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd die to know about the construction and durability. I'm dieing for the Petrie sofa, and this is a much more manageable price!

  34. I remembered that Dana (from dana-made-it.com) has used them more than once. Here's a link to a post on her family blog that mentions her new sofas and Custom Sofa Design.

  35. I looked into this recently and spoke directly with Don about sofas for my clients LR. He seemed great, and told me what fabrics I should look at on his website to request swatches. He gave me his email address, and I emailed him 3 times for swatches and never heard another word. I was so looking forward to working with him.....Maybe for another job!

When I get a new design client (yippee) on a limited budget and they need new furniture - I cringe a bit because a custom sofa, chairs, etc. are very expensive. I hope to have better luck next time with Don.

  36. I love these sofas! Thanks!
Also, I talked about how much I love your parents master bedroom design update on my blog.

I'm totally in love with your work!

  37. Ooohh, I love them all, but I think the one I love most is the tufted white one (third down), I have an obsession with all things tufted and that is one beautiful sofa!

  38. Be careful! We had a friend order through them and it was a total nightmare. They ended up filing a complaint with BBB and was still out the cost of the couch!

  43. Decorno had two awesome debates going last year about this sofa company and the one in Seattle.

    and a follow up post:

Hope you find some useful information as people who had bought from both companies weighed in.
