Ikat Fabric as Wallpaper

I was recently introduced to a new friend who lives nearby me downtown in an amazing loft in Tribeca. She had a baby daughter last year. When she was decorating her nursery space, Lauren was inspired by this room from Elle Decor, designed by Steven Grambel.


She bought several yards of silk ikat from Uzbek Alive (Lauren mentioned the fabric arrived in an awesome package like this) and had her contractor hang the silk with regular wallpaper paste.





There was just enough scrap fabric left over for Lauren's seamstress to make a pelmet box and to trim out the crib bumper.






Isn't this amazing? I LOVE the results!

    Wow that is really beautiful. I love that she didn't worry about lining up the pattern perfectly either. The result is so much more interesting. I had no idea you could hang fabric on a wall like wallpaper. Oh the possibilities!!

    Simply Gorgeous. My Nana had a bedroom where she had fabric on the walls. We rarely saw it because we couldn't go in it without permission, and that wasn't very often.

    I've ordered ikat fabric off of eBay and I too received it in a carefully wrapped little package w/ the wax seal. Impressive! It felt like receiving something from another era.

    Oh my goodness, what a beautiful room! What a great idea to put fabric on the walls! I was actually just watching the Nate Berkus show the other day and he was showing how you can use starch to put fabric on the walls and then, when you are moving or sick of it, it just peels off without ruining the walls!

    I thought you had to have fabric paper-backed (sometimes called "laminated") in order to hang it like wallpaper. Does anyone know if that's what she did or if she just hung it as is?

    Sacha, she did not have it backed. It was hung as fabric. Her contractor just used a wallpaper trowel to smooth it out as he went. Crazy, huh? I think it looks really great.

    What a great result! It makes the patterns even more dynamic that it doesn't match up at the seams. This is the kind of daring project that I wish I were brave enough to do!

    That fabric is stunning - however I have to say the babies crib underneath all the books, and nick nacks freaks me out! Uh, what if something fell! lol I guess they're so careful and only put soft toys right above i can see! Beautiful fabric, really.
