I'm not going to go into detail here, but I had two very negative customer service experiences with two different Home Depot carpet departments here in the NYC area that really put me off. I was all ready to order a rug in this great diamond pattern, but it didn't happen either time because of incompetent/rude employees. And I'm pretty laid back, so you know it must have been bad if it upset me!
The carpet is by Stainmaster and is a great deal at about $2.50 per square foot and then $2 per linear foot for the binding. You guys all know that I love Home Depot - I am a loyal customer there usually, so I don't mind sharing these photos in case you're also looking for a large area rug or wall to wall. Hopefully you have a better ordering experience than I did.
Before I tried for a THIRD time to order the diamond carpet from Home Depot, I decided to stop into the clearance section in the basement at ABC Carpet and Home (a big thanks to Abbey for the tip!). They are having a 50% off sale right now on unfinished remnants.
I ended up getting this 12x15 gold and cream striped Karastan remnant (in the middle) for just a couple hundred dollars -- about what the Home Depot rug would have cost.
It's getting delivered this morning and I can't wait to roll it out in my living room! Rugs are probably my least favorite thing to shop for (they're SO expensive!!), but they really make a big difference in the feel of a space.
A HUGE thanks to ABC for their incredible customer service. Special shout out to Rick, who has worked there for 28 years! If you're in the New York area, I highly recommend stopping by to check out the huge clearance basement. Grab a Madeline Weinrib rug or pillow for half off while you're there.
PS Someone should buy this beauty. I think it was 8x10 (too small for my LR), and I was still sooo tempted.
Congrats on the find I love ABC it is a wonderful place. I might have to head down to the city after seeing the pictures and the great stuff they have in the store. Enjoy the rug.
ReplyDeleteJust helped a friend make a rug purchase for her kid's music room and found it on-line at e-sale rugs and it came in 2 days and she loves it....it is a fun multi stripe which reminds me of the one I just spotted in Veranda.....
ReplyDeleteTake a look there at e-sale rugs.
pve
what a great find, love the stripes! can't wait to see it in your space. and... you're very convincing, so i might be making a stop by ABC this weekend! xo
ReplyDeleteWish I lived closer I've been on a hunt for a rug for foyer forever. Can't wait to see how your rug looks!
ReplyDeleteI won't be able to make it down to the city until spring(darn snow,) but I've been on a rug hunt for months for our dining room. Ever since I recovered the chairs, the rug's been looking like it needed replacing.
ReplyDeleteLove the stripes! Can't wait to see it in place.
I just scheduled my trip out to NYC in a couple weeks and the one thing I have at the top of my list is the carpet clearance basement. Must go. I will even pay to have a Madeline shipped back to chicago. Well worth it
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame you couldn't use that last rug in your entryway... from the photo it looks like it would be amazing with the DIY chest you showed a few weeks ago!
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived in NYC because that 8x10 beauty is exactly what I've been searching for to complete my guest room. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThats too bad about Home Depot, but I have a feeling the universe was trying to tell you that something better was coming along- like your new AMAZING striped carpet. I cant wait to see it in your space!
ReplyDeleteThat basement is a must! I know some NYC designers that check there before even trying anywhere else!
ReplyDeletewhat a timely post! we have a large, odd-shaped living room that needs a rug desperately and I've been at a complete loss. I'm in FL so no ABC for me...but I'll see if I can get some better service at HD:)) Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the rug you chose!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous choice, Jenny! I think you were fated to find the Karastan carpet, and not the Home Depot rug!
ReplyDeleteI knew you would find one! I am so happy for you! Can't wait to see it all pulled together, and the other great projects you are working on!
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I wish I could find a place like that in my neck of the woods, I'm in need of some rugs.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could go there! I need a big rug so bad. It's hard like said because they are so expensive and I have dogs and a cat who will mess up any rug so I hate to spend a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteMan, I'm so sad I do not live in NY too. That store looks amazing. I love rugs but am always put off my the price tag.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think that Home Depot is great for many purposes, carpet is just not their strong point. I also tried to source some carpet, but the Home Depot price was easily beat (when you include the quality factor) at a fancier carpet spot here in Dallas (Peek's)! Plus, the customer service could not be beat.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the picture of all the rugs rolled up, I fell in love with that gold and cream stripe and thought to myself "that HAS to be the one she got!" Please put up some pics of how it looks in your apartment! I bet it will be stunning on your floors!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great tip on the clearance section of ABC. Picking a rug for our upcoming living room, is posing the hardest decision for me, because like you said they are expensive, but they also can make a room!
ReplyDeleteI love the diamond carpet! I can't wait until I own and can pick out what I want
ReplyDeleteAnother great option for you might be FLOR - www.flor.com
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think your Home Depot carpet find might have saved my life (and my marriage, LOL)! I have my heart set on a neutral gemoetric rug for our living room, but it has to be twin-baby and small-dog friendly, and less than $400. I wonder if they carry it at Lowes, too... I do like them better than Home Depot...
ReplyDeleteI love your stiped rug selection. What a great find, Jenny!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could hop on a plane to NYC and head straight to ABC!!! Great find for your living room, can't wait to see it rolled out!
ReplyDeleteI've been on a rug hunt forever too so I know the feeling. Ended up finding a great Dash & Albert one on Horchow (they just ended their 20% rug and free shipping promotion). With the promotion I ended up saving $300+! I'm SO excited to get it!
ReplyDeleteGlad your hunt worked out too. Nothing worse than bad customer service.
So is it finished around the edge? Or will you have to get that done professionally too. I think the one you ended up with is way prettier than the HD one too!
ReplyDeleteI am just like you I hate buying rugs because of the expense, especially since we have a dog who seems to make mistakes on my rugs a time or two. They are just so expensive! Out of all the hardware stores I always seem to have the most trouble with HD when it comes to customer service, I can't tell you how many times I've gone in there and not even gotten a hello. I was a HD girl for years but have made the switch to Lowe's, in Indy their service is fantastic! As far as ABC Carpet, I'm so jealous, and I will add this a few years back in my building and materials class for school a rep from ABC came in and talked to us and I was blown away by his knowledge! It's nice to know that there are still quite a few people highly skilled in their professions, it really does make the difference, even if you do sometimes have to pay a bit more. Can't wait to see how the rug looks in your space!
ReplyDeleteI'm struggling to find the right kind of rug for our new living room. One couch is sage green and the new one we're planning to buy will likely be grey or bluegrey. Our carpeting is a deep yellow-beige. Walls are, for now, white. Thoughts? Should we go patterned? Any sites you'd recommend for ideas?
ReplyDeleteMy eye went straight for the striped rug:) Thank goodness you bought it! I would have had to call ABC home and have them ship it to me without anywhere to use it HA! I can't wait to see it in your space.
ReplyDeleteOmg that striped rug is gorgeous! I hardly ever comment, but I have to say it beats out that HD rug 100 times over. Glad you founda rug. I am in the process of trying to find a living room rug as well, but I have been less than successful. A good rug is sooo expensive! And I have gone the PB, West Elm route before only to have my house full of tumbleweeds...
ReplyDeleteGreat find! Also, thanks for pointing out carpet remnants as an option for a large rug. I forget about sometimes, but it's often the best and cheapest solution.
ReplyDeletelove love love ABC!!
ReplyDeleteAren't you SO happy?! I just did the same thing (for the first time) for a client in a little town where there are very little resources. We walked into a small carpet store, went through their remnants and found 2 perfect ones for both her living room and dining room. Amazing. Both were around $150 each and then we just had to have them surged. The funny thing is we have been looking for months and couldn't find anything that was perfect that was in her budget. Remnants are the way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I never stepped foot in ABC Carpet because I thought it would be waaay over my budget but now that I know there is a clearance basement I'll have to check it out!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE ABC. This post has me wishing that I was in NYC to hit up their sale. Great find! Can't wait to see it in your space.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, thank you! There is also a huge warehouse / outlet in the Bronx. They have great remnants as well as a lot of furniture. The prices there tend to be a little more "negotiable" on rugs and large pieces than the ABC Basement. However, taking a cab both ways will put a big dent in the budget. Thanks again for all the ideas!
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! I hate rug shopping- depressing. I've sort of lucked out on CL (good enough for the sippy cup years) but I wish there were some prettier budget options out there. Love the stripes- can't wait to see it in place!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you did this post. I have to get wall-to-wall carpeting in two rooms and was hoping for something in a diamond pattern. I will have to check this one out. I was also thinking about seagrass, but I have a feeling it may be pricey.
ReplyDeleteI gasped when I saw the striped Karastan...then I read that you picked that one and I said "YES!" out loud...lol...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I can't wait to see pics of that gorgeous thing in your living room! Congrats on finding such a great piece at half off!
Wow, that looks like fun! I can't wait to go there in May when I hit up the big city. I can't wait to see photos, it will be so stunning, as always.
ReplyDeleteI've changed my furniture a few days back but could,t do it about the carpets. But I am thinking to do it after a few weeks.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I would DIE to go there- the beauty and the deals...heaven!
ReplyDeleteWOW. Wish I was up near ABC so I could hit up this sale. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow..I am in the market for a family room rug 11ft + and may just need to make a trip to ABC. What a find!
ReplyDeletelove that place! although when i went they were strictly against taking photos, i guess they've changed their policy. love the rug you chose!
