Also, the rug had dried up a bit during the winter especially the part that sat over the floor grate, and it was starting to shed a little bit. It wasn't a huge deal on its own and actually I think I was supposed to be misting the rug with water once or twice a month to prevent the over-drying, and I never did. But between the shedding and the discolored spots (which you can sort of see in these photos), I felt like it was time to start looking for something else.
So here was my thought process.
1) While I loved the pop of red from the persian I had layered on the jute, I knew I wanted something more neutral. I'm going to bring in a bright orangey red or a hot pink on new pillows I think (I loved that combo with the green velvet sofa).
2) This rug needed to be a wool or wool-like pile for clean up purposes. For stain-hiding, I am a big fan of persian style rugs, so I was hoping to find something neutral but with a bit of an irregular pattern.
3) In apartments especially, where 90% of the action happens in the one living room, it's pretty inevitable that spills and stains are going to happen with kids and pets in the house. During my search I actually found a completely gorgeous antique silk Oushak in beautiful light colors from one of my dealers for about $3500. Pricey, but it was seriously worth every penny. I thought long and hard about investing in that rug. It was stunning, but what happens when someone sneaks juice over into the living room or when Linus has an accident? It would be hard to not freak out, and that's just not how I want to feel about the stuff in my house. So I passed on the Oushak and I kept looking.
I had my eye on this rug called the Beaumont Adileh in Natural from Rugs USA for a couple weeks. I was sold out in the 10x13 size that I wanted, but they have this feature where you can give them your email and they'll contact you if/when more comes in stock.
The reviews were good and they were having one of their famous 50% off plus free shipping sales, so when I got the email that the large size was back in stock, I moved fast. And I'm so glad I did! I love it. (Just checked - the latest sale is 60% off!)
I love the range of colors in the rug: cream, gray, taupe, black, brown, even a hint of apricot. It's totally one of those rugs that changes colors in the light.
And I think it actually looks kind of worn and old. Or at least, it doesn't scream out cheapy fake rug when you walk into the room. My only complaint is the binding on the edge, but for this price, you win some, you lose some.
Man, I love the black in that border!
The rug is 100% Viscose, which surprised me with its softness, even though the rug is pretty thin. And it's hard to tell in the photos, but the viscose gives the rug a really silky look. It honestly looks so much like the sheen of the Oushak that I loved, I just couldn't believe it when I rolled the rug out. And just like silk, it totally changes color when you rub your hand against the pile.
Oh, hello, soft and pretty rug...
So while I miss the texture of the jute a bit, I'm totally in love with the new rug. It is bright and airy and it cleans up like a dream. I'm a very happy customer and now I'm thinking of getting this one for my office... :)
Loved the rustic unique rug

I know we're talking about the rug, but I'm smitten with your teal & gray couch! So lovely!

Hi there! I really love your brown couch! Where is that from? Absolutely love your style - hmm I have some re-decorating I need to do.

The rug gives the room a warm yet sophisticated look. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteI SO wish I had gotten that black and white pillow the last time I was at Ikea!!!! I LOVE it! Have to go back soon for another Latt table and chairs for my kids - hope they have some of those pillows left! Love the rug!
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference a rug makes! Jute rugs are nice, but I always felt like the one you had darkened this living room and stole some attention from the gorgeous furniture. But now! This rug looks fantastic - so much lighter and brighter and your furniture really pops in contrast. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteit looks beatiful! love the worn in look.
ReplyDeleteWow I love it. It is neutral but with tons of depth and different shades. Such a great choice.
ReplyDeleteYou really can't go wrong with Rugs USA, I mean it is honestly one of the best resources for rugs on the internet. Their prices are so affordable and they have so many different styles to choose from.
Your living room looks amazing!

ReplyDeletelove it- in fact, just bought it! with 3 boys (husband makes 4)this rug is just what i was looking for. thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteI just love looking at your home. You have a wonderful eye for design.
ReplyDeleteYou take so many risks and make such unexpected decisions about decor!
ReplyDeleteOf course, this so coming from someone who has NO idea how to decorate! I love your taste and style! I would never be drawn to the things you get but that's only because I lack your skill! I love your decisions! And your place is so awesome!
i love it! (i also love the look of jute, but it never feels comfortable underfoot to me) the new one looks so shiny and soft!
ReplyDeleteReally really gorgeous! We are in the process of rug shopping right now, so I had to read this post!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice on the rug. I love its worn in look... it fits with your homey living room. And RugsUSA is so awesome. You can't beat their price and selection!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful!! I already pinned it. We love our jute rug in the living room---but it is always nice to have a back up. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same rug in my dining room! I love it!!! I layered a zebra hide on top of it for a bit of a pop of pattern. Cant wait to see the pillows!!
ReplyDeleteCould I have missed a post? I see a beautiful lamp on a console table behind the sofa... ;) The new rug is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLet us know if you get the rug in the office. I'm also looking at it in orange but its not wool so I'm still looking around. Josie
ReplyDeleteLOVE love love this rug! I too am a pet owner and we have already had a few accident son our new rug. What do you use to clean your rugs? I'm always looking for a good cleaning product.

Looks great! I bought a couple of rugs from Rugs USA recently for a client and was very happy with the quality and design for the price. HOWEVER!!!!!!! When I tried to return one of the rugs, it was virtually impossible. Their customer service phone line must have only one person manning the phones. It took over 20 minutes for anyone to answer whenever I called. You are totally responsible for return shipping, which for a rug is VERY expensive.....and with their prices sometimes more than you might spend for the rug in the first place. After all was said and done, I could not get the rug returned and am stuck with a 9x12 very nice ombre rug that I don't know what to do with. SO....Rugs USA has great stuff for a great price, but do not count on returning anything. After researching online, there are LOTS of others who had the same experience.....even the reviewers on the Rugs USA website!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you had a good experience though! The rug really does look great!
This post spoke to my heart. I too have a jute rug that has a horrible blemish due to a my baby who had bad stomach bug. Like you I tried my best to clean it but now how I have some discoloration. Funny thing is I have been eyeing the same rug as you but wasnt sure about viscose vs. wool. But given your post and your high remarks I'm going to bite the bullet. Plus at 250 ish dollars for 8x11 I can't really go wrong. :)
ReplyDeleteThe rug looks awesome! Totally different look in your room/photos then on their site. Now seriously considering this for our living room! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! Though I haven't looked into it, if the edges are a concern would it be worth having them re-bound? I may consider purchasing it too, though the binding would be very exposed, hmm...
ReplyDeleteI love the look of a jute rug but have learned the hard way that they are not right for me. I also ran into discoloration from spot removal. I had pretty severe sun fading that happened in just a few months. And when I picked it up for removal I was grossed out by all the dirt that had fallen thru it's little holes in the weave that had been totally missed by my vacuum cleaner (a Dyson so it should have been sucked up).
ReplyDeleteI love your new rug! It looks like a well loved antique with its soft fading. I've had a good experience with Rugs USA in the past and would definitely purchase from them again.
I've ALWAYS wondered about viscose rugs! Well I'm gonna wonder no more! This looks AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteI've had my eye on that one for a long time and I think your review just convinced me to pull the trigger! I love rugs usa but I wasn't sure if it would really live up to the pictures online- Thanks for posting on this!
ReplyDeleteMargaret @Rummage Living
I've been eyeing that rug for a while but wasn't sure about the color--they should use your photos on their site. So much more helpful and likely to sell the rug! It looks gorgeous and I'm going to buy it for our bedroom. We had a viscose rug before and I loved the look of it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love it! Rugs are so hard to purchase online without 'trying them out' first. I'm so impressed with your vision! And, I love how the rug looks truly antique. Great job!
ReplyDeleteJust a note: the Rugs USA site basically has a sliding price scale - so if you feel bad for missing a 60% off sale and the it's not a 35% off sale, look at the prices. They have come down too - so the rug will ultimately be the same price. They do a good job freaking people out about catching sales, though! Sneaky!
ReplyDeleteThis room would look so good if you painted the coffee table red!
ReplyDeleteReally pretty! I love the subdued colors - think they are the perfect complement to the bold use of color you use elsewhere. I am longing to replace the jute rug in my bedroom. Won't do that again!
ReplyDeleteWe have a jute rug in our bedroom that now has a big discolored spot thanks to a certain pooch :( It probably wont be around for much longer - the rug that is...we'll keep the pooch ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for something like this for my living room. In your pictures, the colors look cooler than on the website. Would you say that's the case? If so, I'm going to order this!
ReplyDeletei spy a sofa table.
ReplyDeletelove.
How accurate is the color of the pictures that you took? Your beautiful rug looks silvery grey, but the one on the website definitely looks more creamy beige. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi guys!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice comments! I'm glad you like the new rug as much as I do! :)
The color in my photos is accurate. The photos on the site make it look way tan/brown. It swings more gray/cream in real life, though there are golden tones in the pattern (which you can see in the close ups) and I love the depth they give to the rug.
Hope that helps!
Be careful with viscose and water--it spots/stains. Shouldn't be a big problem with the pattern and all the variation, but just to be on the lookout!
ReplyDeleteThe look is lovely!

Hi Jenny! Love this rug...so much actually I recently bought it as well, although mine has yet to arrive! Hopefully it looks as amazing in my place as it does yours. Oddly enough, I too am replacing a Jute rug with this. Great minds must think alike!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Carly
That rug adds a lovely layer of richness without screaming look at me. Great choice. Particularly love it with the spotted bench and brown leather sofa. The overdyed one for the office is awesome also. I'm thinking about it in yellow now.:-)
ReplyDeletei've also heard a lot about viscose not having the ability to stand up to traffic. your post caught my eye because we had FLOR tiles in our main living area but a recent small flood makes it necessary to replace them. with a family of 9 and a dog too i don't want to spend even $250 if it won't last a least a few years. any thoughts on this? i have no experience with viscose rugs!
ReplyDeletegorgeous! I may just order this! Did you get a rug pad?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteoh and one more question....how long it take to arrive?
ReplyDeleteI have this same rug in 4x6 in our master bathroom where it gets water on it all the time - I haven't noticed any spots that bother me and think it just adds to the character. Totally agree with you on the binding though... makes it look cheaper IMO. It's probably better in the large size, since a lot of the edges are covered by furniture - I think it's more noticeable in the smaller size where you see the whole edge all the way around. Looks great with your furniture!
ReplyDeleteThe rug looks great! I also love how eclectic and...'collected over time' the space looks. Beautiful!

Great rug! I've had to replace so many because of pet
ReplyDeleteaccidents --but I did hear of a carpet cleaning product
from Martha Stewart that's supposed to be great for
natural fiber rugs -- it's called HOST dry carpet cleaner
& she says it works really well on natural fiber rugs.
It looks great in the room and I love the aged look. It also looks soft and comfy to sit on the floor. I'll bet the dog loves lying on it, but hopefully not throwing up on it....
ReplyDeleteJenny, thank you for this post! The rug looks great in your living room. We were having issues picking out a soft rug that can hide some dirt and fur from our black & white dog. After reading your review, I was sold and immediately went to the website and purchased it.

ReplyDeleteStunning rug! I love the wore effect and soft colour.

Oh golly. This room is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteJenny, I love your blog. I've been following it for awhile now, and have gotten so much inspiration from it. I rent in a 1920s apartment building (in Brooklyn Heights, coincidentally!) and our apartment, though charming, has not been well tended -- but thanks to you and your blog, I have lots of ideas for how to give it the love it deserves.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I feel like you read my mind today because I just impulsively bought a neutral-colored Safiveh rug for cheap on Gilt to replace one of ours that has been pet-and-kid stained into oblivion. I was starting to second-guess buying a rug online, but this post makes me feel like I did the right thing!
What size did you get?
ReplyDeleteI need larger than 8x12 and was wondering if they just sold out. I was looking at this rug and read some not great comments. I was so happy to see you posted better pics of it. It looks beautiful in your space.
SO glad you essentially reviewed one of these! I've been eyeing different overdyed versions, and get really confused by the conflicting reviews. I know this isn't exactly the same style, but the material and pile are very similar, so it gives me a good idea how one would "read" in my home.
ReplyDeleteI think it probably depends a lot on the environment, too. Although not an expensive rug, your home's style brings it up to par.
Gorgeous!
Change is difficult, but it forces us to try something new. Nice choice, my dear! Lovely room.
ReplyDeleteLove the new rug, and you're right it definitely has an old vintage feel to it. It looks like it would be way more expensive. Great find!
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer this rug to the jute/red rug combo. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI cannot describe how envious I am of all the online rug shopping available to Americans. Rugs are so expensive in Canada, and so few places ship here reasonably (once you add on international shipping and duty, sometimes the cost to get it to Canada is more than the cost of the rug!).
ReplyDeleteLOVE your new rug. Love love love it.
And you should so get that lovely overdyed one for the office.

Hi Jenny!
ReplyDeleteI too have gotten so much inspiration and fun from your blog. Thanks! I was actually wondering if you were looking to sell the Persian rug you had under your coffee table. I was *in love* with it when you first posted about it, and can't seem to find another one with exactly those colors in my price range. Anyway, can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Jenny - I love the rug and now I'm thinking something like this would work great in my bedroom. I have a jute rug in my living room and it sheds like mad - it's like I have another pet. I wonder if I ought to start misting it!

ReplyDeleteJenny, thank you so much for the quick answer! As soon as I saw your comment that the color of the rug in your pictures is true to life, I ordered the rug for my house. You're an awesome blogger, keep up the amazing work!
ReplyDeleteyou're rocking that lovely rug. Love Rugs USA, i got a really good quality moroccan trellis rug there. That rug makes the room so so cosy.
ReplyDeleteLove the rug! I am a RugsUSA regular and have been wanting to see this type of rug in real life (well, sorta). I'm definitely keeping it in mind if I ever need a rug for a really large space.
ReplyDeleteJenny, I have just put in a request for this rug in their largest size listed (although I wanted a larger one for my DR...10 or 9X13ish) I do have a question for you since you have the rug. I am concerned it would be too soft for DR, with chairs sliding on it, could you please give me your opinion on that. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteLove this rug. I'm so glad I ran into your blog and this post. I've been madly looking for a rug and now I've found it! Sadly they are out of stock :(...but perhaps soon...very soon. Thanks
