I bought an 8 foot (which we had cut in half in the store) and a 3 foot length of copper pipe, two copper floor flanges and two elbow connectors at Home Depot, as well as four casters and a 4 foot pine board.
I used the 4ft lengths on the sides and the 3ft on the top. I connected them all with a little plumber's glue and tape to make the joints extra tight. We also painted the top of the pine board a pretty peacock blue color I already had on hand.
I screwed in the four casters and the two floor flanges and used glue to help hold the dress up rack in place after it was screwed into the flanges.
It's sturdy enough, but I wouldn't make this one if your kids would be tempted to hang on the bar. It's really just strong enough to hold a dozen or so kid-sized dress ups.
And I have to say, I was SHOCKED at how much my kids and their friends love this little dress up rack! They were like, yeah, yeah, wallpaper on the ceiling... but look at that dress up rack!!!! :) It was awesome.
I'm obsessed with this playroom and love the fun pops of color the dress up rack adds!
ReplyDeleteI bought a wire shelving unit with a clothes rod (off amazon, they have them at the container store too) and used a hack saw to shorten the vertical rods. I agree --kids love and so much cuter than bins.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea! I'd love to try this for our boys playroom for their cowboy and police officer outfits!
ReplyDeleteSo darling and creative!
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely!! That room is beyond fabulous- so inspiring as usual:)
ReplyDeleteI had been considering something like this but the amount of floor space it takes up is the sticking point for me. I wonder if I could make a wall-mounted version of the copper pipe clothes rack? Ceiling mounted? Hooks? Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteI adore this - its simple and fun! I can see it easily transitioning to one of the girl's rooms, once they get outgrow playing dress up.
ReplyDeleteamanda, you could just mount it like a towel bar. make sure the sides leave enough space for hanger clearance.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I recommend using the flanges that Jenny used to mount it to the board for the wall mount. We made a copper shelf and these worked great. If you make it 32" wide, then you can mount it into the studs so it can hold more weight.
ReplyDeleteThis garment rack was featured on the Smitten Studio website last year, too. http://www.smittenstudioonline.com/diy-garment-rack/
ReplyDeleteCute! I'd love to see more DIY projects you can make with plumbing stuff.
ReplyDeleteThis turned out great! Love the copper with the peacock blue. And aren't kids funny?! ;)
ReplyDeleteI simply wanted to write down a quick word in order to say thanks to you for those wonderful tips and hints you are showing on this site.

Maybe I missed this in an earlier post, but where is the rug in the playroom from?
ReplyDeleteLove love this!!
