Taking Photos of the New Bathroom

I think one of my favorite projects we finished recently was this little sink for the guest bathroom. I showed some progress shots here and here. I am SO happy with how this one came together!

We've been enjoying the finished and installed sink for a couple weeks now, and I've been so excited to share. The hold up was I didn't have a lens that could capture the whole sink!

Lately I've just been photographing projects with my old Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. I have a pretty standard EF 50mm f/1:1.8 II lens and a nicer mid-range zoom lens (EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM) that was a bit of a splurge last year. I've been planning to invest in a nicer camera body this year as well as a good wide angle lens.

Luckily Canon reached out about to me about working with them on their new 'Bring It' campaign. They gifted me with a new EOS Rebel T5i (which has great video capabilities - I was excited about that! Stay tuned for some fun DIY videos!) and their brand-spanking-new wide angle lens, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. I was SO excited to try out the new lens on our bathroom sink! Finally a lens that could capture the full space, tight angles and all!

I thought it would be fun to show how different lenses capture the same space. Here's the sink, shot with the new EOS Rebel T5i camera and my old EF 50mm lens. I love 50mm shots. These are such affordable lenses, I think everyone with a DSLR should have one! They're especially handy for portraits and photographing kids. Every shot will be sharp and bright with a 50mm!

 photo sink50.jpg

Here's the same shot, but using my EF 24-105mm lens, zoomed out as far as it will go.

And here's the new wide angle lens! Ta-dah!!!! Look at that beauty! What's most impressive to me about this lens, besides how well it does in low-light situations, is that it shows almost no warping. There's none of that fish eye look that sometimes happens with wide angles.

On the other side of the room, we hung two Andrew Wyeth prints. Here's the 50mm version:

The mid-range lens:

And the wide-angle again from the same spot. So pretty!

I've never taken a photography class, which makes me really appreciate how user-friendly Canon's lenses are! I think it's so cool to see what a difference in perspective there is here between the three lenses!

 photo IMG_0136.jpg

I was shocked to learn that the new wide angle lens is less than $300! I don't know how I lived without one for so long.

Also, I was surprised at how much I love the new Rebel T5i camera. There are all sorts of amazing features that make it really easy to shoot in manual or program (P) mode, which is sort of the step between automatic mode and manual. The large display screen makes it so easy to preview how a photo will look with different settings before you take the photo (!), which takes out a ton of guess work for those of us who are not pros!

 photo IMG_8048.jpg

One of my favorite features of the Rebel T5i is the amazing touch screen display! With the swipe of my finger I can scroll through my playback and I can zoom in and out, just like on an iPhone.

 photo IMG_8064.jpg

Another favorite thing is a setting that releases the shutter and takes a photo when you tap on the LCD screen! It makes for a very smooth and steady exposure if you don't want to set up a tripod and use a remote.

I was SO happy to try out this camera, and especially the new wide angle lens. It's a major game-changer for me. I'm really looking forward to sharing a full house tour with wide shots so you guys can get a better sense of layout going forward!

  1. I am buying one for my Canon TODAY. That has been one of my biggest struggles when trying to take amateur pics of my design work. Now that I know it's affordable, I'm on it...AND it's for "work!"

That bathroom is stunning. Great work with the olive paint. Really fresh.

  2. Your bathroom is absolutely GORGEOUS! And that sink (gasp!) I use my 7-year-old Canon, and have been thinking of upgrading. But I might get a better lens and see if that works for me. Have a wonderful weekend! x

  4. Beautiful! May I ask who the artist is of the other painting next to the sink?

  13. You are a damn genius, Jenny. I have a sign on my bulletin board at work which reads "You have the same number of hours in a day as Jenny Komenda" - I changed it from Beyoncé, because she's got nothing on you.

  14. Love love love this bathroom! We are in the middle of making some quick decisions for our own master bath renovation. Can you site where you got that brass faucet, or do you have any recommendations for brass faucets for kitchens??? I am at my wits end trying to find faucets in the right color that I like!!!

  16. What about the warping shown at the edges of the first and last pictures? In the first picture, in particular, you can see the sconces are very warped. Were these taken with the new wide angle lens?

  17. I love how you explain what the different lenses see. That's a great little lesson right there.

Bathroom looks amazing! I'm crazy for those floors!

  21. beautiful shots, jenny! i'm curious, are you worried about the weight of the sink on those little tiles? i assume the sink is bolted to the wall, but I was just wondering if you did anything to prevent them from cracking under the weight of the base.

  22. Isn't it amazing what a great camera and lens can do? I don't have a wide angle, and I've wanted one, but never thought I could really afford one any time soon. Thanks for showing that it's within my reach!

And I can't get over the bathroom. It's just so beautiful. Every detail.

  23. THAT SINK…! This space is so beautiful, can't believe what you created out of what was there. Way to go, Jenny!

  24. Please, please, please, where is that tile from? I have looked EVERYWHERE and all I have found similar is from Mandarin Tile in the UK. It's pretty much the only tile my husband and can both agree on so I'm trying to find it somewhere in the US!

  25. Much to love in this post!
I've been wanting a T5i since my g11 gave up this time last year! It was a great camera but I'm ready to go back to lenses.
I'd really like to know where the sconces are from? Love those too...

  28. Jenny, first I have to say that sink is to die for!!! Then I want to thank you for reviewing the T5 and the wide angle lens. I've been thinking about getting a wide angle for shooting better room shots for the blog. Great job on that bathroom!

  30. This sink is genius and I think super practical for ours which is the only one on our ground floor so it see's lots of splashing from kids. Can you share more about mounting the sink to the wall? Did you consider doing a back support leg (so it could stand on it's own)?
    Thanks!

  31. What a difference that makes! I've always wanted a wide angle lens, I may just have to splurge and get one! Love your beautiful bathroom, it is stunning!

  34. Ms. Jenny, your timing is impeccable as usual. I actually splurged for the Rebel T5i about 6 months ago for the purposes of interior shots, but have been lacking a wide angle lense. Just this week I have been banging my head against the wall trying to get good shots of 3 small bathrooms on a house we just finished. You just saved me hours of research on which lense to purchase and the price couldn't be better!! I could kiss you right now. thank you so much.
