Whether you are currently renovating an old home, or plan to someday take on a huge renovation (me!), or even if you just have an appreciation of beautiful old homes (and amazing decor!!), this book is a great read. Pure eye candy from start to finish, and loads of useful information.
To enter to win your own copy of this big, beautiful coffee table book, please leave a comment here about your dream home. A new build with classic details? A centuries-old townhouse in the city? A charming farmhouse in the country?
After finishing Restoring A House in the City, I definitely would chose a grand brownstone in the metropolis. I'm completely in love with the Greek Revival style especially.
Commenting closes Thursday, February 4 at midnight. Good luck!
I love the farmhouse look with traditional and and modern furnishings mixed in!
ReplyDeleteJust yesterday me and my husband were talking about this. We now live in the city which is very busy, noisy, lots of cars and not a good place for little kids. If we can, we would love to move to somewhere outside in the country (if that is possible in Holland..., in a lovely old house!
ReplyDeleteXO E
My dream home is the one I bought this past summer. A 1937 stucco with just the right bit of architectural charm without being the least bit fussy.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, definitely a beautiful, large old home from the 1870s-1901 with lots of original features. I would love to incorporate modern conveinences but stay sympathetic to the era.
ReplyDeleteI love the kitchen very beautiful and the paining on the wall of the stairs is very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the white color of the kitchen it looks so neat clean and very organize, I love it.
ReplyDeletei live in my dream home though it is a monster. it is a queen ann victorian built in 1874. i have completely redone the entire house as well as the gardens. my future dream is to buy and restore an old farmhouse with all the out buildings!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle of a renovation and need some help and inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteyes please! We are currently looking for our first home and would not mind a bit of a fixer upper, this would inspire and help!
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is a sprawling century's old farmhouse with creaky floors and original hardware.
ReplyDeleteSomeday!
We would love to fix up an old farmhouse in the country...a place to get away from everything! What a fantastic book!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I JUST bought our first home and would love love LOVE some inspiration and guidance!!
ReplyDelete(written from under a pile of painted-over wallpaper chips)
fingers crossed!
Can I have two? My husband and I are both architects with different and many dreams. I would love to have the peace and quiet of a small rustic farm house decorated in sparse modern in New Mexico, juxtaposed with a beautiful old traditional brownstone in Chicago, luxurious and cozy.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle of redecorating after some major construction, and this book would be so inspiring!
ReplyDeleteI would say my dream home is an old and lovely place brought into modernity with beautiful bones and simple clean lines. Most important is lots of beautiful light! Big windows with light pouring across wide old wood floors. It good be an old greek revival , federal or even a barn. OOoh maybe a barn with the back side opened up with all windows so the rolling hills on the back side seem to be framed by the big old wooden framing. So hard to pick one. I would take any of the homes pictured from this book too! Lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy dream is of a modest old country home who's windows showcase nature's seasons, who's worn floors have lost count of the family and friends that have walked their boards, who's walls could tell many a story and whose beautiful old kitchen table is truly it's heart. :)
ReplyDeleteWe're currently living in an 86 year old house that needs to have a whole bunch of bad renovating undone. Our first project is to get this house done, live here a few years and then sell. But I have my eye on an enormous 1880's grande dame down the street-- crusty with balconies and dormer windows and porches-- THAT'S my someday house. It's currently broken up into 5 apartments and will need to be totally gutted-- fun!
ReplyDeleteOh, dreaming here....I'd like an old home (brownstone), with original details, a wide planked wooden floor that creaks in the night, with a front stoop over looking a busy city sidewalk that is steps from a great park/playground. A teensy yard in the back that gets juuuust enough sun to keep a few flowers alive. And two bathrooms (I have two daughters...need I say more) and my own washer/dryer. Yes, the last two parts are mundane. But oh, to dream....
ReplyDeleteWe are in a state of continuous (and unending!) renovation of our 1937 bungalow on Long Island. This books is a wonderful inspiration!
ReplyDeleteMmm, this book looks delicious! I love looking at books like this to get ideas, or even just to dream! I'm an Army wife living overseas with my husband in government housing where there are many rules on what we can & cannot do to make the house our own. I am so looking forward to the day when I can update the house however I choose!! What a dream it would be to have a brownstone to make my own!
ReplyDeleteMy dream is a 1950 mid-century ranch home that I could restore.
ReplyDeleteI'm all about an old house with tons of charm and character... but really right now I'd just be happy for an apartment with a second bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a lovely brownstone to restore, but a girl can dream, can't she?
ReplyDeleteThat first picture of the kitchen is fabulous! I want it! This book must be full of inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI posted about my dream house here, but I would love an old house (a Craftsman, Victorian, or old American house) on the outskirts of town with all the character and charm it had since first built but renovated to fit with the the current times.
i have heard such good things about this book, and the decwhore in me needs it badly...
ReplyDeleteof course i have dreams about restoring a house somewhere...the location and type is ever changing..a new york or paris pied a terre to a country house in um....the country duh. one day i will though and lets just say this book will be a good starting point to solidify the where's and what's of my big renovation in the future.
btw. the word verification here was prell..rip awesome shampoo.
I was just flipping through this book at the store, looks amazing. As for my dream home... I would love a fixer upper. I am not particular about the kind just one that needs love. Although since its mostly up to my hubby I am sure we will always be in new construction.
ReplyDeleteRight now we live in an old home, so this book would come in handy! My dream is to move farther out in the country though.
ReplyDeleteWe're hoping to move into an old city house (bidding on one tomorrow) so this book would be so useful, not to mention gorgeous to drool over.
ReplyDeleteWow, eye candy indeed! I would love this for ideas looking ahead at the future. Nothing is more eco-friendly than taking an old space that was not being used and making it a home. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am also having a Give Away on my blog right now if anyone is interested in winning a bread machine!
Looks like a wonderful read! Thanks for the great give away.
ReplyDeleteI live in my dream house. It's a center entrance colonial. It has hardwood floors, plaster walls, a slate foyer. We live in a wonderful neighborhood and close to a fantastic school. Slow but sure I am fixing it up to my style. Traditional with a twist is what I call it. Mostly traditional with a fun or unexpected element thrown in.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to move from this house I would love a big old farmhouse in the country with a front porch. I would sit on a swing and knit all day. Though that is a VERY big dream with 6&7 year old girls!
I love renovated, historic homes. It's my dream to restore them. {especially around the south- like charleston or savannah}
ReplyDeleteI NEED THIS BOOK! Our 118 year old house will thank you! It needs all the help it can get!
ReplyDeletePLEASE pick me. :)
{dream} Restored B&B ... countryside, acreage, wisteria, lilac bushes, crown molding, coves, arches, wood, crystals, leaded and stain glass, candles, pitchers, roses, fragrance, white rockers, ferns, geranium filled pots ... homemade bread pudding in the oven for our guests ... booked solid for the upcoming year. {dream over}
ReplyDelete;')
I'd love a century old house with new wiring, heating, etc, that I could paint and wallpaper to my hearts content. Right in the center of the city!~
ReplyDeleteI have lived in and renovated many different styles of houses from a mid century ranch to an 1800's farmhouse and have loved them all, but my favorite is my current home, a cottage in the city. I would love this book for the eye candy as well as the ideas i could use!
ReplyDeleteKarin
What a beautiful book. I personally would love a little cottage with an old fireplace and views of the English countryside...That would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteI have hopes to one day have my cottage beach inspired house by the water.
ReplyDeleteOh to do that would be a dream come true! I might have to keep it as a dream for awhile, but this book would help me keep it alive!
ReplyDeletereally need this.
ReplyDeletemajor reno about to go down here.
this would really help to sooth the process.
pve
My dreamhome is a 1920's home we are looking to buy in a small coutry town. This would so inspire!!
ReplyDeleteI want a red-brick federal style 3 story nestled in a historic district somewhere. Right now we're in Upstate NY, but I'd love to find this home in Marietta, GA or Chattanooga, TN or somewhere down home!
ReplyDeleteOddly, I have two different dream homes. One is an older home that would be restored with some modern amenities yet keeping with its traditional tone. The other would be a home built and designed of entirely green materials. I suppose in a way, I could combine the two - restoring an older home with green in mind.
ReplyDeleteMy dreamhouse is a little cottage on a lake or the ocean, with shutters and a front porch looking over the water.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Alison
We live in a city (Boston) and I love that our city already has oodles and oodles of charm and personality. What I haven't seen in apartments here is a cozy ski lodge feel. My dream would be to take an old Beacon Hill brownstone and fashion the already amazing features that you find in the older homes to feel like a ski lodge. Great hardwood flooring, a grand fireplace, lots of open space, vaulted ceilings. Ah I could go on...
ReplyDeleteA cabin with lots of white and reclaimed wood.
ReplyDeleteI feel lucky to be living in our home that we renovated, but my DREAM home would be a cottage on the ocean!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh... an early 20th century American Craftsman. Complete with a big front porch and awesome staircase in the foyer. The decor would be eclectic and a river in the back would be nice. I haven't thought about this at all... can you tell :)
ReplyDeleteI dream of an original craftsman home with beautiful, thick trim around... everything! I love the built-ins, the clean lines, and the dark, muted colors. I want columns on my front porch & on half-walls to my dining room, with William Morris wallpaper. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!
Oh I hope I win. I love coffee table books and this one looks like a great one to read.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I will be moving in about 16 months- once he finishes residency. I don't know if we will build a house--- or renovate one. Big decision.
My dream house would be a farmhouse in the country. Keeping my fingers crossed for that one!
since we just moved into a real "fix-er upper" my dream home would be anything that doesn't leak, creak or need painting! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I would LOVE this book!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the question my husband and I endlessly debate (he's finishing his Ph.D. right now, so we've had a few years to think about what we'll do with the rest of our lives...). We've decided that we'd love to do a post-doc in the city for a year or so, but we'd like to end up with lots of land--a farmhouse with an established orchard would be just right.
This book makes me think of our first home, which was a cottage-style postwar home in an AWESOME Minneapolis neighborhood. Drive down the streets--under a canopy of massive oak trees--and you can just picture all the GIs with their families in 1948. :) Coved ceilings, crystal doorknobs, ceramic tile bathroom, oak hardwood floors, stone fireplace, picket fence. Perfection.
ReplyDeleteMy ideal home is on the water, but has the feel of an old farmhouse ... I drool over floors like the one in your final picture.
ReplyDeleteONE dream home? Hmmmm, too hard. Like my decorating styles I have many. I would love a brownstone in the city, a cottage at the beach (complete with screen doors, shutters, and outdoor shower) and a beautiful cabin in the woods while a huge part of me would love an aging stone farmhouse in the Cognac region of France. Lots of decorating in my future, huh?
ReplyDeleteA little cozy quaint old farm house on some beautiful acreage where we just settle down on is my dream. Especially after moving again and again in the military. If only we had the time, money, and I can convince my hubby. Hopefully one day! Some of those hardwood floors are absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteWow! I would totally love this book! It would give me encouragement to sell my uninspired condo and get my dream house - a 1920's bungalow (with minor repair work needed-I am but one woman!) with a yard for my beagle, Cinder. We would love to curl up and look at the beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeleteI would love a classic farmhouse in the country! It's our dream...
ReplyDeleteI'd like any house that I can afford! Living in DC makes that extremely difficult. I'm sure when the time comes I will be happy in anything that is ours and I will be able to decorate to my hearts content. This book would inspire!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are going to be looking for a home soon -- my dream is to turn an old farmhouse into a home....I would love to have this book!
ReplyDeleteI would love to be back in New Orleans in an old shotgun house. I just love some of the features of many of the uptown homes, such as floor to ceiling windows, original wood floors, and double hearths! It makes me giddy just thinking about the sophisticated style.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of housing dreams - an apartment in Paris near the Jardin de Luxembourg, complete with one of those black metal scrollwork railings on the balcony...a farmhouse in Vermont with steep eaves and a big front porch...But perhaps my ultimate dreams is the very first house my DH and I bought, a sweet little row house in New Castle, Delaware. I still have dreams about walking into that house.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have something old with loads of character like hardwood floors, glass doorknobs, and tons of detailed trim work! Doesn't matter if it's in the city or country:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful giveaway! My dream house would be an old townhouse in the middle of a great city! Janell
ReplyDeleteLovely kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI would love a 1920's bungalow.
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is a classic white colonial with huge windows and loads of architectural detail. And it would be surrounded by a huge yard filled with flowers and trees and a soft green lawn.
ReplyDeletei live in the rear building of a carriage house in the west village which was built in the 1800s. if i could live anywhere, i'd stay right here, but i'd renovate and take over the other apts in the building because mine is only 200 square feet! talk about living small!
ReplyDeleteGive me anything but builder's grade, blah, same-as-your-ten-neighbor's-house house!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I check it everyday for great decorating tips. We are just buying our first home and this is all so new to me that I take all of the ideas that I can get! I want my home to be unique, each room with great style, I just don't know where to start. This book would be a great jumping off point. My dream though is to have an old farmhouse, restored with a beautiful red barn in the backyard.
ReplyDeleteOur dream home is casual but beautiful....rich mouldings, interesting niches, warm and comfortable, a place for friends and family to hang out, with a big farm table that always has room for one more!
ReplyDeleteMy dream would be a farmhouse in Brenham, Texas. Nothing beats fields of bluebonnets in full bloom.
ReplyDeleteI would love to renovate a rowhouse in the city!! But we'll probably end up building a new, "old" house.
ReplyDeleteA West Village townhouse, for sure. Swoon.
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is any house that is restored or renovated or built by the 'This Old House' crew! A view of the ocean would also be lovely.
ReplyDeletei would love a big farmhouse in the country.
ReplyDeleteall of the above, please!
ReplyDeleteI live in Washington, DC and my dream restoration project would be an old Victorian townhouse on Capitol Hill!
ReplyDeleteMy 3 Home Wishes:
ReplyDeleteOne Greenwich Village Brownstone.
One large bank account to support the renovations.
One fun, like minded interior designer to help...Jenny!
Happy Monday!
I am new to your blog and I am in love.
ReplyDeleteI love a farmhouse in the country. :>
ReplyDeleteI'm a New Yorker...an old townhouse restored to its former glory would be an absolute dream...!
ReplyDeleteMy dream house would be a farmhouse on a nice secluded plot of land. I would love to restore and old one or build new using re-claimed materials. That last picture you posted with the wide plank floor is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous photos! That kitchen is to die for!
ReplyDeleteI would love nothing more than to own a lovely old brick house in the city centre.
Our dream home would be an older home (circa early 1900's) in the wonderful, charming neighborhood of Belmont, in our favorite city in the world: Charlottesville, VA. The proximity to restaurants and shops is appealing, as is the natural beauty of the area. My husband and I are both UVA grads, and we both feel a special connection to the area. Thanks for the giveaway!!!
ReplyDeletesince moving to new york city a few years ago, i constantly dream of renovating a big old brownstone on the upper-upper west side or in brooklyn. it even kept me from sleeping last night! i just couldn't stop thinking about it! =)
ReplyDeletedefinitely something old, and enough money to fix it up right!
ReplyDeleteMy old house (1925 bungalow) is a love-....(hate is a strong word) - perhaps labor of love with a healthy share of frustration. Some renovation projects have been planned but many have not - and I find more and more time passes before I can make any decisions with projects (front bathroom had no sink for 2 years!)- I need inspiration to replace my exasperation. Blogs like yours and the ones I have found from LGN certainly help - yet I can easily blog my day away without a single decision, but many fun rabbit chases. Would love to continue making progress and have some great ideas to consider outside of cyberspace,
ReplyDeleteAfter living in an older home I would like a new build that looks old!
ReplyDeleteI would love an old colonial with a wrap around porch, with all sorts of original details to restore, in the middle of acres of land in the country.
ReplyDeleteSomeday!
I moved into my dream home! A 1953 mid-century modern. It's wonderful, but needs some definite updating. We have only just begun.....
ReplyDeleteI would love a partially renovated craftsman home where there is still some left for us to do but not too much. But, those brownstone photos are amazing--I could live there!
ReplyDeleteI would love any house that has old wood floors, painted tin ceilings, and lots of architectural details. Preferably in a nice big city!
ReplyDeleteMy dream house would be an older home with charm and unique architecture, but updated with modern conveniences.
ReplyDeleteoooh those floors. an home with old workd charm.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny,
ReplyDeleteIf I could pick, I would choose an OLD farmhouse in Virginia somewhere, complete with history, classic style, and lots of kids!
Love your blog!!
Anna
I grew up in Brooklyn (though not in a glorious brownstone, alas). I now live in NC, but often think about returning to NYC and living in a beautiful old brownstone that can be restored and updated. I would love to get my hands on that book for inspiration. Thanks for hosting, and I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are currently doing a top to bottom renovation of a 1930s bungalow a few blocks from the texas shore. It has been an awesome experience introducing modern touches in this character-filled house.
ReplyDeleteIf walls could talk! How wonderful to add family memories were so many have already taken place. Sigh, some day!
ReplyDeleteI would love an old restored farmhouse in the country! With fruit trees and a barn out back, please! :)
ReplyDeleteMy dream house is the one that we are currently restoring in the city! Looks like an awesome book and I would just love to win it! We're currently looking for inspiration on how to restore our original circa-1800 wide plank hardwood floors that are in ROUGH shape!
ReplyDeletewell, i have about 10 dream homes :) but most often i dream of having a townhouse (or at least a duplex) in cobble hill or brooklyn heights, both in brooklyn. that's my weekday home. on the weekends we'd go up to our light-filled, modernist cabin in the berkshires...
ReplyDeleteMine is a modern design - floor to ceiling windows, an entire wall of windows that opens to the outdoors.
ReplyDeleteone day i will have a a beautiful craftsman style house that i will fill with my flea market treasures and thrift store finds :)
ReplyDeleteA Classic Colonial Revival, Georgian Townhouse or maybe a 19th Century Farmhouse. So fun to dream about, but I guess for now my 500 sq ft apartment will do!
ReplyDeleteI would love an old farmhouse or a brownstone in the city. Maybe I need one of each?
ReplyDeleteSwoon! Such beautiful images! We are hoping to buy our first home in the next year and these images make me so excited for home ownership!
ReplyDeleteI'd love a traditional colonial with navy shutters- yes please!
ReplyDeleteMy dream is an 1800s farm house that has been hardly touched. Of course, it is almost impossible to find an untouched beauty, but one of my life dreams is to restore an old house. cneaglefan at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI would love to build my dreamhouse with old, classic charm, reclaimed wide planked wood floors, beautiful windows for bright light, clean lines, open and flowing rooms, wood beam ceilings... I am constantly looking for inspiration.. there are so many fabulous and beautiful ideas out there!
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is on a quiet street in a city full of energy, modern appliances but with lots of character and charm.
ReplyDeleteI think I would love a city rowhouse with a small courtyard/garden for the children and dogs to play in, that would be perfect...and maybe a country or mountain house for the weekends :)
ReplyDeleteHeather
Oh, how I would love to have a home in the country decorated just like that! Until then, I could use a little inspiration for my own home.
ReplyDeleteToday I would love to buy a rundown cottage, cape cod style and gut it and start over.
ReplyDeleteBut then tomorrow I'll really want a beat up brownstone to rehab.
It changes daily! :)
What a gorgeous book! My dream home would be a 100-yr-old semi-restored NYC brownstone. Original floors, molding, built-ins and doorknobs - all the charming touches. But renovated kitchen (of course) and bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI love traditional, and I love modern, I live in a house built in 1916 and I see so much potential if only I had the time and resources.
ReplyDeleteWe have a century old brick twin right outside the city with secret places and tons of charm. I love it, but it is work. But my dream home would have to be the farmhouse. Open floor plan with huge plank floors and windows everywhere. Great giveaway. I have this book on my wishlist from Amazon. We will put it to good use (not just a coffee table display).
ReplyDeletethanks
Beautiful and homey. Love it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful book of a great house!
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is the house I live in, which also happens to be the house I grew up in. I hope for it to be the house my grandkids visit me in. This grown is fertile with our family history and I can't wait to see what we reap in the future. I hope to win this book, because even though this house is my dream house, it does need work. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteCha Cha
I have always loved the city but lately I feel the country calling me. I think we're going for a farmhouse when the time comes. This book looks awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI have two dream houses! My first one is a home in the style of the one from the movie "Something's Gotta Give". I love the color palette and how it's right on the beach. My other dream house is like the one from "Practical Magic", it's old, full of character. Amazing wood floors, a beautiful garden, and a kitchen to die for.
ReplyDeleteI think in the end my dream home has a lot of character.
I have a heartbreaking story about my dreamhouse...
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, my husband and I were considering buying a vacation home in Margate, New Jersey. We looked at a house there that didn't "quite belong" but both fell madly in love with it. It had been on the market for a long time. It was built by the same architect that built Betsy Ross's house and had many of the orginal features. It had a gorgeous tin roof, original windows, orginal floors, wood beams on the celings, and all of the door knobs and hinges were handmade and intact. Incredible. We finally made the decision and called the realtor back to put in an offer...and it had sold a few days before! We still vacation in NJ, and everytime I pass it a small tear rolls down my cheek :) Maybe it will come back to us someday. xo
yes please! - larousse
ReplyDeleteOh, I need this book.
ReplyDeleteI would love a little Cape Cod style cottage situated by the ocean. Something with lots of beachy charm that I could add my touch to!
ReplyDeleteLooks like it would be a great book!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in NOLA I've always dreamed of a grand home on the parade route portion of St. Charles Avenue.
ReplyDeleteWhile that still holds true, I'd love to build a Greek revival on the Chesapeake Bay which is closer to DC. Fondly called, Chesapeake Hall, the long drive leading to the front door opens to a centerhall open on the back to sweeping views of inlet waterways and bobbing crab traps.
I love English cottages. I already live in one of sorts (albeit not in England), but ideally I'd like one with more space and leaded windows. And in a climate that was more kind to cottage gardens!
ReplyDeleteThe house I'm currently restoring (and have been for the last ten years!) is pretty close to my dream house. It's an unpretentious 1910 classic three-story with a front porch and tall old windows. In my daydreams, the ceilings would be a foot higher, the fireplace would be more interesting, and the whole things would just a leeetle bit bigger, with a generous front hall and a mudroom! Oh, and a much bigger yard.
ReplyDeleteRenovated Row House for sure. I have a friend who grew up in a beautifully renovated and decorated Brownstone in Brooklyn just block from the water. I still think of that home as my dream home- I was always jealous of her family's incredible style! Such expansive spaces and hallways, the whole house just screamed luxury. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fabulous book, and of course I would love to receive it!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous giveaway! I am so excited!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a sucker for old homes. I'm talking late 19th or early 20th century. I would love to redo a little classic home here in the south somewhere!
Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
Oh and would love to redo a city townhouse!
ReplyDeleteA mansion from the 1930s in West University Place (by Houston)!
ReplyDeleteCount me in! Love the pics you've posted from the book.
ReplyDeleteold townhouse with modern furnishings!
ReplyDeleteMy dream house is a just the right size cottage with lots of charm. It must, however, be in the perfect neightborhood where our kids can run free!
ReplyDeleteJust bought our first home and can't wait to get started on renovations! What a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI already own my dream home, but it isn't quite living up to its potential just yet. It's a 1905 brick folk Victorian. We bought it totally gutted and have been doing everything (framing, electrical, plumbing, flooring...EVERYTHING) ourselves, so it's taking some time. We live in a small town, so I'm imagining it as a slightly more sophisticated version of a farmhouse - something homey and comfortable. All the modern conveniences, but true to the age and style of the home.
ReplyDeleteI am a country girl at heart... so for me it's a farmhouse with modern touches. My father and I renovated the house my great grandfather was born in (originally constructed in 1856)... I have lots of pics if you're interested in seeing how we've decorated (we used lots of your ideas!)
ReplyDelete~LAA
i would love to restore a home. it's fun to work within limits. i love the hints of color these places have.
ReplyDeleteMy dream home would be a new build with arts and crafts and classical details. We're living in an old home now, and it's not enough of the fun stuff...too many plumbing, electrical, insulation, etc. issues going on without much charm. That looks like a fabulous book!
ReplyDeleteI would love an old spanish style with exposed wood beams and iron window boxes and a little courtyard. The book looks fun and I do love a lot of different styles.
ReplyDeletei'd be a happy camper if my dream house had that kitchen in it w/ the rolling ladder....
ReplyDeletePlease pick me. Im originally from NYC and grew up in a Brownstone and currently live in Arizona. Im always so homesick. Love that style!! Will forever be in my heart
ReplyDeleteA 1920's Spanish Revival on a quiet tree lined street!
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is in the town where I grew up and ever I since I got my drivers license when I was 16 I have detoured down its street to see it! I love this house. My husband and I moved recently, and before we left, I took tons of pictures of it (I'm sure the owners thought I was a stalker!) But, I may not get the chance to buy it one day so I figured I better have good pictures so that I can build myself an exact replica!
Wow - tough question. Dream home. I think I'd have to say either a beautiful town house in London or a loft with huge windows in Paris... yep. I'd take either one.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway!
Alaina
I'm ready for a spread out 1 story home with LOTS & LOTS of windows. No more 2 stories if possible. I'd have a large kitchen with LOTS of cabinets and a huge great room and an adjoining sun room. Maybe one day....lol.
ReplyDelete1900s bungalow!!! Exposed interior brick, hardwood floors, plantation shutters, double moulding in glossy white around all windows, large front porch with a swing and plenty of room for potted plants, attic renovated as an office/playroom with sky-lights, pedastal sink, octagon shaped white tile with black accent tile, basement coal shoot... And hopefully, some information/pictures from the original home owners. If only the walls of old homes could speak!
ReplyDeleteOh I would love to have this eye candy to look at as we work away on our fixer-upper.
ReplyDeleteI grew up the daughter of a home builder, so I have to say NEW. There are just too many incredible options available to incorporate these days.
ReplyDeletesaw99a @ yahoo.com
I'm not sure where I would like to find a old home yet (we are military and move around a lot; in 20 years or so we'll pick our favorite place) but I know now that I want that library style kitchen more than anything. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteA charming farmhouse in the country is me all the way! I can't wait to be able to do this one day.
ReplyDeleteDefinately a brownstone in the city! I dream about having one every single day!
ReplyDeleteToo bad we don't have any in Toronto :(
This is a book I would love to own. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to restore a big 1870s Italianate place--but one that's had the plumbing and wiring updated in the last 25 years....
ReplyDeletewe're currently working on our 1900 brick twin in the burbs. one day i would love to have an 1700 or 1800s farmhouse in the country - complete with a barn of course!
ReplyDeletemy dream home has to have the right mix of old and new ...
ReplyDeletethanks for the giveaway
radiyas at gmail dot com
My dream home would be a brownstone in NYC on the upper west side.... A girl can dream right?
ReplyDeleteI would love that beautiful book. Any home with character would make me happy, an old farmhouse would probably fit my lifestyle best.
ReplyDeleteI think that an old house restored to it's initial glory would be my dream. I love old things that remind me of a time when quality- rather than quantity- was always the goal.
ReplyDeleteOkay, here is my dream house (today anyhow) Either a larger bungalow or a classic four square in a historic district. Updated but with really great mouldings and built ins... a butler's pantry, I have to have a butler's pantry. And, the perfect place to put our Christmas tree every year. Needs to have a front porch and at least one fireplace. And great lighting.... oh I could go on and on... I would really love to win!

My dream home is a large 1920's era craftman home. I just love their large porches and low steeped roofs. They look so sturdy, cozy and inviting.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, I never thought I'd want to live in the country. I loved the idea of a tiny apartment in the city. My husband has convinced me of a home on an acre+. I dream of restoring a barn. We'll have chicken of course!
ReplyDeleteI dream of renovating a historic home in our downtown area. I love the charm of old homes, but really love the conveniences of an updated kitchen and bathrooms!
ReplyDeletemy dream home would be old and full of original features... but seeing as my husband doesn't really like old houses, i can still dream of building a new house with tons of vintage details and charm.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't think I could ever quite convince my husband to do that (move to the city and restore a home) it's a secret dream of mine ... and maybe this book will help convince him.
ReplyDeleteBut I'd be equally as happy to discover a gem of an old farmhouse and restore it too!
I've been daydreaming about that pantry since I first saw the picture of it. gorgeous!
I've always wanted to restore an old house. I grew up in an old colonial, and I loved watching the way my mother mixed new furniture with the house's architectural details.
ReplyDeleteI'm still kicking myself for not pushing harder to buy the 1895 Queen Anne that I fell in love with (and now we've ended up in a development!)...Oh well, next time, when there're more funds to do an old beauty justice!
ReplyDeletei love details & character in a home. i think my dream home would be farm-house-ish. feel lived in and loved on but still have stunning (yet worn) details. we recently purchased our first home and it has very little character on its own. maybe this book could help give me some diys ideas.

I would love to sit down and pore over this in a couple of weeks after the craziness in my life calms down.
ReplyDeleteI would love to do two renos in my lifetime, although I don't have realistic dreams of that happening! I would love to do a metropolitan home first and then, because my heart is always in the country (being that I was raised on a farm), I think an old beat-up farm house with great bones is just up my alley. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for another fun giveaway!
My first house was a cookie cutter suburban nightmare. I'm currently in a 1960s ramshackle. I would love to restore a farmhouse in the country or live in a saltbox. Dreams . . . someday they might come true if I work on them.
ReplyDeleteI just love old houses in general, and with currently living in an apt I would take whatever I could get!
ReplyDeleteMy dream home would be a traditional colonial with counless windows, oversized molding, wainscoting, and loads of charm!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I salivate as we walk past brownstone renovations...perhaps someday?
ReplyDeletebeen eyeing this one! pick me, pick me!
ReplyDeleteI want a beautiful old townhouse in Chicago!
ReplyDeleteHmm...an apartment in Paris wouldn't be so bad, either.
Yes please! I'm still in an apartment so any house would be a step up from here! I can't be too picky. Ha ha.
ReplyDeleteNot sure exactly the "look" of my dream house, as it keeps evolving over the years. I do know it's in the city rather than the country and it would have mid-century modern details.
ReplyDeleteI dream of a big old Victorian in San Francisco! I would de-frill the inside and go funky modern with it, but leave the gingerbread details on the exterior. I currently own a little rambler about 1.5 hours south of my favorite city, so maybe some day! SarahV
ReplyDeleteMy dream home is our present home with you as the decorator! The giveaway book would definitely help.
ReplyDeleteA chic farmette in Pennsylvania is the place for me! Lots of room for crafts, sewing, and llamas!

ReplyDeleteMy dream home will be fixing up my current home and tweaking it to our taste. Your blog is fantastic and your creativity is beyond words.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win a great book....
Missy
I'm actually in my dream home...my
ReplyDeletefirst house. A small two bed one bath cottage in the city. Once I add another bathroom, it will really be ideal!
thanks for the chance,
mary
My dream is to renovate an old house! Sigh, Someday...
ReplyDeleteSo hard to pick just one! After some experience, I'm leaning towards new construction with classic, traditional details--lots of them!
ReplyDeleteI would love this as we just bought and are currently living in a 95 year old victorian. Feels like a dream home to me!
ReplyDeletelove the modern farmhouse look!
ReplyDeleteyes please!
ReplyDeleteoooh, the book looks fabulous! swoon!
ReplyDeletemy dream home is definitely (to renovate) an older white center-hall colonial with navy shutters... heaven!
My ideal house would be a brownstone, but since I live in Seattle that probably won't work. I guess a craftsman might be a more realistic goal. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteooh, where do I start... I'd love to renovate a tuscan villa, or an old apartment in a big cit and discover the stories of people who lived in the apartment over the years, but i think i'd mostly love to find an old house on a large property and turn it into something great! great giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteA Craftsman!
ReplyDeleteWhen I dream of a house to restore I think of England. I would love to buy a house in the small country town my great grandmother left to come to America. My mother is her only descendant and I would love to fix up a house to holiday in and search for long lost distant relatives. And the salvage yards in England... I drool over them from here in the States already!
ReplyDeleteI think I would go with a new build with classic details.
ReplyDeleteI would love a brownstone in the city on a tree lined street with all the original moldings and floors but modern and vintage furniture mixed in.
ReplyDeletei would love an old fixer upper cottage or ranch home. just a beautiful old home... we would prob live near a city, but not super urban. thanks for such a great giveaway!
