  5. Hickory Chair Spool Chair is correct! During the Great Depression my great grandfather actually made corner shelves out of old spools and sold them for $3 each. Recently I found one in a relative's basement. I guess that's why I remembered the name of the chair!

  11. Spool chair or bobbin chair! The best are the antiques (check 1stdibs.com for resources), but there are some wonderful repros on the market. And they are surprisingly comfortable if you have enough padding in the upholstery.

  20. Silly me, I just checked the bottom of my chair and it's not Fairfield, it's Tommy Bahama Home. Just in case anyone's interested in a very nice Hickory Chair lookalike for a bit less. - anon 8:19

  21. Neat! The strange thing is, as soon as I saw this, I thought of old colonial furniture (as in 17th c.) Obviously, no one in their right mind would paint a Brewster chair because they're so rare, but the comparison between the two is uncanny.

    Here's a pic:

Weird, right? Now I want to know if the spool chair makers were aiming for that, or if it was pure serendipity.

I have lovely shelves in my living room that are arranged with books and objects de art, but in my living room I have shelves that are stuffed with BOOKS...and I can never figure out how to make it look nice (even though a load of books does look nice to me no matter how you stack 'em).
