I've been thinking about this 60" round arch table from West Elm (which is 15% off right now!). It looks nice in person, though I'd probably end up painting it or faux liming the finish to work better with my new chairs.
I am going to check out this vintage Saarinen style oval table today. I would love to buy a real vintage Saarinen, but the rounds are too small and the oval tops are way too long. This one has the perfect dimensions (60x45"), but I'm a little nervous about the thickness of the table top. I want sleek here, like the original. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
And in the DREAM table category, I would give anything for one of these Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb arch tables.
The dimensions are spot-on perfect and I could not love the design more (arches and octagons!?). If you see one at auction, please please please let me know!
Do you know of any other amazing round tables on the market right now? I'm itching to make some process here and would be willing to just buy something as a place holder. Not my favorite design approach, but I'm going a little crazy here. :)
I really love the one you are going to look at today! I hope its a good fit!
ReplyDeleteHave you looked on ebay? Thanks to you, I was inspired to start looking outside my city and use uship to get the pieces home. I bought a beautiful vintage Baker table for a steal in the spring. I also found a 72" round Baker dining table at a used office furniture store...you wouldn't believe the price if I told you! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThe Saarinen style tables always remind me of the table I had in my Barbie dollhouse...
ReplyDeleteoh i just love that octagonal one - what a unique piece.
ReplyDeletei just have to tell you - there is a GREAT round table at World Market right now, that is lime washed with a zinc top and i think its WAY WAY too great for the price ($399 i think??). It might be TOO small, but something to check out.
The one you are looking at today looks like it could be a really honey. Hope it works out!
ReplyDeleteThe arches of the octagon table remind me of the arches in your built in bookshelf project, which makes me think you could build your dream table:)! I can't wait to see how the room comes together with whatever table you end up choosing:)!
ReplyDeleteI looooove the Octagon table. For a round table I would look on etsy or craigslist for a sheaf of wheat dining table. You can also try www.1stdibs.com. I have the coffee table version made classic by Chanel.

I think Nate Berkus had someone on that had the dining room version. She has a square glass top but you could always switch it out for a round glass top.

Jenny-- what about this one in the Wash, DC area? It has a leaf and is only $200. http://craigseasy.com/Home/PageViewer?url=http%3A//washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/fuo/3342536858.html
ReplyDeleteJenny, are you kidding me? DIY that table, sister! That's a project that has your name written all over it!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this. We are about to move to our new house and the one downside is the dining room is smaller. Which means my favorite 100 year old farmhouse table and chairs won't fit. I've been thinking about a round table as well. I'm excited to see what you decide and everyone's suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI just bought a custom table from Ariele Alasko -- her work is awesome, and affordable:

Jenny - I bet with your DIY skills, you could make a Robsjohn-Gibbings look alike!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that the two tables you're loving are so different: one has no legs and the other has tons. I looked into having something like a Saarinen table made for our kitchen. You can buy bases from a variety of places and have a top made by any countertop place. If you go the marble route be careful that it's not too top heavy- really be mindful of the weight and center of gravity.
ReplyDeleteoh goodness. those octagonal babies are breathtaking!!!

ReplyDeleteI was just thinking I'd be careful of the West Elm table if you are wanting to put 6 chairs around it. The one pictured looks like it would fit 4 comfortably, but it gets annoying eating with a table leg between your legs!
ReplyDeleteCheck this out... http://www.abchome.com/store/store/pc/calvin-klein-radiant-dining-table-252p20192.htm
ReplyDeleteThe Robsjohn-Gibbings table is my dream dining table too, and like Beth I always thought it could be DIY'd pretty easily. Oh man, if anyone can pull it off, you can. DO IT!!
ReplyDeleteJenny, eBay has a McGuire Round bamboo table that you might like... I recently bought the same one at a local resale shop but with a much larger top, and it's gorgeous. I do agree w others, that your dream table is a total DIY- if anyone can build it, it's you!
ReplyDeleteThe Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb arch table is looking awesome and the color and style will match the place you mentioned in the first photo.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW you could totally build that table yourself, no doubt about it!
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing thus 60" round for a while now. Very reasonably priced; especially if you plan on personalizing.

Love the arched table!
ReplyDeleteYou should make one/get one made...doesn't look too complicated...
Love the arched table - I can see you diy-ing it!
ReplyDeleteHave Plexi-Craft make one for you. I've seen it before and it totally looks cool in lucite.
ReplyDeletei am super obsessed with jonathan adler's $$$ nixon dining table, especially in brass and marble. the walnut top is nice, too.
ReplyDeleteJenny! I'm with everyone else-- you could soooooo make the arch table! Do it! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope the saarian worked out for you, otherwise there is no harm in buying a filler, as you say. You can always re-sell it. i bought a craigslist "filler." Its not a dream table or anything, but it is a 60" round with 2 extentions. (and it was $60) It has been in my dining area untouched, because i am unsure what to do....but something must be done. Here it is if you'd like to take a look..I would love your opinion...ill probably just copy off you anyway! im so glad you want a round table:)
ReplyDeletehttp://cindyjespinoza.blogspot.com/2012/04/dining-room-dreaming-and-new-craigslist.html
oh go on, build another piece of furniture if your spare time :)
ReplyDeleteor you might find something round on craigslist (as you well know). we found a perfect old round clawfoot that seats 4 without leaves and 12+ with leaves in. I reupholstered the chairs in some navy zebra fabric I bought from you to update the look.
good luck in your endeavor!
you are so handy that i would think you'd be up for making an arch table! i bet you could totally make one!

You guys are all a bunch of enablers!! I've been thinking about trying to DIY the Widdicomb table, but I'm really not that great of a carpenter. I just might do it though! I guess the most I'd lose is some time and about $100 in wood?
ReplyDeleteJenny, have you thought about having a local carpenter custom make the last table you posted??? I absolutely love it too!
ReplyDeleteMy vote is that you make it. I have full confidence in your abilities!
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing like a round table for the family and you can always pull up another chair or stool for kiddies. We have my husband's grandmoher's table with a lazy Susan in the middle and i wouldn't trade it for anything. And I agree with having one made.
ReplyDeleteThe West Elm table looks like it won't be comfortable to sit around for more than 4. It's so not fun to spend time at a dinner table when you have a (table) leg between your legs. ;) Also, the arch might get in the way of Evie's tripp trapp...?!
ReplyDeleteLoving the octagon table!! Please do try to DIY it!
Hie Jenny!
ReplyDeleteI looked for months for a round dinning table. I love saarinen table, but not the ovale ones. I am thinking about this one : http://www.retrofurnish.com/fr/tables/round-table-tulip-marble-inspired-by-eero-saarinen.html
But, it's 48' and it can just host 6 person. I found one on ebay that was 53.4' but it's to massive...
Not easy... Please try the DIY so I can try after!
After looking for AGES for a 60" round, we came across the Magnolia Round Table from High Fashion Home. It's way more than I wanted to spend, but it was totally worth it. It's especially nice because the rustic, whitewashed finish is perfect for life with a toddler.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.highfashionhome.com/magnolia-round-dining-table.html
this one at CB2 may work for you!

One Kings Lane has some good, round dining tables right now in the "Simple Modern Dining" shop.
ReplyDeleteJenny, how about this table available at One Kings Lane? It's not exactly inexpensive, but seems to be good value for the size: https://www.onekingslane.com/product/16073/922875?aname=sales_event&lname=product_link
ReplyDeleteNothing beats a round dining table for conversation! One of my favorites is Oly Studio's Luca table. Its gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think you could tackle a DIY version of the Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb arch table!
ReplyDeleteTake the $100 you would have spent wasting your time and materials and put it towards having a professional custom woodworker make you the table. That table will be harder to DIY than it appears.
ReplyDeleteI would really like around for my dining room also. I saw what I thought was a great idea at a model home. They took the white round from Ikea and use is as a base for a 60 in (or more) glass top. I really liked the look and with a space of 13 x 13 using a glass top would really open things up. I do have a picture and will try to upload it soon.
ReplyDeleteMy roommate and I have the table from West Elm that you are looking at, and we aren't big fans. The current finish scratches pretty easily, and when we assembled it, we over-tightened a bolt - when we turned it over, we could see the raised spot in the table where the bolt was starting to press up through.
ReplyDeleteWe got it super on sale, and usually cover it in something so it isn't a big deal for us, but I wanted to share since you're thinking about that table. Love the blog!
Hi Jenny, don't know if you looked at Pier 1 yet. They have these tables (Ronan) http://www.pier1.com/Ronan-Pedestal-Extension-Table---Tobacco-Brown/2410153,default,pd.html?cgid=dining_tables, also in honey, black, and white. Friend has one in her sunroom I think in tobacco and it really looks fab. Our dining room is small as well and table is 68" long, so I think this could work for you!
ReplyDeleteHave you checked out the Lucca table by Oly? It comes in a 60".You have a lot on your plate. I don't know why all those people act like building a table is no big deal.i'm convinced you are capable of anything but you might kill yourself trying to do it all.

Love Love Love the octagon tables but don't really think they are practical in a casual dining room setting. All those legs would drive me crazy trying to fit extra benches and chairs in when you have lots of guests. I say, the less legs the better...
ReplyDeleteI have a round table that unfortunately does not fit in my new folia. I need to sell to buy an L-shaped desk. Check it out it's an actual wagon wheel transformed into a table that seats four comfortably. thefolia.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for post I like it me also share with you some tips hope you Hand designed furniture is built to fit your space. Traditional cabinets are built to standardized sizes and homeowners with rooms that have unusual angles have a hard time finding pieces that fit their space while improving the function of the space.Handmade Furniture
ReplyDeleteThere are hundreds of different styles for round dining table sets out there. Mainly, you want to choose a set that will fit in with the décor of your dining room and that complements your overall style

Good looking round dining table,it will be the very costly,I think.

Hi Jenny!!
ReplyDeleteI am a long time reader, so oddly enough, I feel like you are one of my friends! I pretty much stalk Craigs List daily, sending my friends the good stuff, begging them to buy it and let me redo it for them. So being that we are friends even though you don't know it, I found this awesome table. It's a little smaller than you are looking for, but too gorgeous not to share! If it were me I'd haggle my way out of the hutch and chairs (MCM overload=retro kitschy). Minor detail: I live in Dallas. Haha so that makes this info pretty useless!! Oh well! Enjoy my dear!! http://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/fuo/3341928764.html
This is closer to NYC...

Most of the dining tables that I saw have round shape. But some says that cornered tables are better specially if we have small space. We know that not only the space have to be considered in choosing the right dining table. We have to be consider also our budget.
