Brass Plating

Some of you sharp-eyed readers noticed I changed out the hardware on our PAX wardrobes.

I used these 15" Varnhem pulls from IKEA. I loved the long, thin lines and the great price, so I snatched up six and sprayed them gold!

Another (albeit more expensive) route would have been to get these pulls plated in brass. I have used a local company called Papago Plating before with good results!

I had them strip the lacquer off my kitchen faucet so that the finish would be "living" and have a more natural, subtle patina.

I also used them to plate the hardware I bought for my clawfoot tub.

It's a great option for when you're trying to make plumbing from different lines look cohesive together. We're doing this with a client's bathroom fixtures now, trying to match the really bright satin brass finish of their new faucets on the drain pieces of their free-standing tub.

A few tips for a successful plating experience - Always ask for samples of the finishes! Also, it's a really good idea to only bring the parts of the faucet that need to be plated with you to the plating company. And be sure to photograph all the parts you are dropping off! You don't want to lose any of the pieces! :)

  1. Hi Jenny! I love the new hardware on your wardrobes. But how did you cover up the holes from the previous pulls so well? I have a hard time covering holes from former hardware on my laminate furniture. I would greatly appreciate your help! I am dealing with this issue on my kitchen cabinets currently!! THANKS!

  2. Do you have any idea what company makes that tumbling blocks tile? I have been trying so hard to find a marble tumbling blocks tile and have been unsuccessful thus far. Thanks in advance!!!

  3. Love your kitchen faucet! Where is it from? I'm getting Carrara marble counters and am trying to research faucets. I only have about 200$ for a faucet, is there one in that price range you would recommend and what finish looks best? I have a stainless steel half radius undermound sink.

  4. Hi Rachael -

I used a combo of wood filler and caulk. The trick is to over-fill, let the filler completely dry and then sand it down. It takes patience this way, be the results will be perfect! :)

  5. Melissa - I think there is a pin on my flooring pinterest board that has a link? Sorry - I would grab it for you, but I am on my phone today! :)

Heather - The faucet is from Signature Hardware I think? There is a kitchen reveal post called something like "Our Almost Done Kitchen" that should have all the sources!

  6. I took some hardware to Papago plating and had a really terrible experience. They really looked awful when he was done ( super splotchy) it took him 5 more weeks than he oringinally said it would take. They did have paint on them, so maybe something that hadn't been previously painted would be fine? I don't know, but I guess I would just throw it it out there because I they would not refund me and it was kind of a bummer.
