Big Black and White Photography

I love this image of Ellen Pompeo's kitchen from Elle Decor. How amazing is that blown up photograph? I wonder what train station it is?

I'm thinking about doing something similar with this photo that Abbey posted a couple months ago. Both my husband and I love it. The sea of bowler hats is so graphic. And that guy smiling at the camera on the left makes me laugh. I also love that it's on Wall Street, sort of near our downtown hood.

I've been using Wizard Prints for a lot of printing jobs lately and I am so, so happy with their products and their customer service. They are fast and reasonably priced -- two big (unsponsored) thumbs up!

  1. Yeah, I saw and saved that Charlie Chaplin pic as well. It just blows my mind. Thanks for the pic enlarging source too!

  2. Just a guess, but it could be Termini Station in Rome. Love the tiled floor in her kitchen as well!

  3. I don't think anything can beat black and white photographs - big or small. Although any oversized artwork always makes me fall in love!

  5. I love big B&W photography like this! I need help though. I have been looking for an image I saw forever ago -- I believe maybe Cottage Living -- of a giant B&W photo of a child on top of an armoire in a living room. I want to copy this! :) If anyone knows where this image is, let me know! :)

  8. I have been wanting to do this for a looong time with a particular photo in mind. So I have a question for you. If you were interested in enlarging that photo that you featured...how would you go about doing it if say- it's owned by Life or the Library of Congress? The Life images I want to print say "For personal non-commercial use only". Do you think it would be ok for me to send these out and legally print/enlarge them?

    Thanks!

  9. Cher - It's not illegal to use images like these for personal use. It's only a problem if you try to sell the enlargements. I used to worry that the printing companies would say no for copyright reasons, but none of them have a problem with one-offs that are obviously for personal home use.

My suggestion is to find the largest sized file of the image you can and upload that to Wizard Prints or another online printing shop. On Wizard prints you have all sorts of choices for paper and sizes, etc that give you lots of options for the final price.

  12. Ok that kitchen is great. The tile, the stripey rug, the stainless steel, the dark wood. *sigh*. The openness. The lack of clutter makes me want to drag her out back and ask her "where? Where are your magnets and your dish scrubbies? Where is your mail?" (probably shoved in the hall closet... right? lol)

  15. I've been contemplating using an oversized black and white photo above my bed in lieu of a headboard (or possibly above a low, square headboard).

Also, Ellen Pompeo's house is probably my favorite that's been featured in Elle Decor in recent memory. I love that it's super relaxed but still chic. And who wouldn't covet her terraced garden and view!
