Oversized Upholstery Nails On Runners

I visited the Kips Bay Showhouse this weekend with the lovely Caitlin. We had a great time examining all the finishes and details the designers chose for their spaces. Celerie Kemble and Amanda Nisbet had my two favorite rooms (I have snippets to share later).

Here's a little detail in the house I noticed and loved. The bound broadloom carpet was tacked down to the wood floor with oversized nickel nail head trim. There was probably six inches or so between each nail head.

What a great idea to make inexpensive carpet look really pricey and custom!! I especially love it on the stair runner.

  5. Jenny-do the nailheads actually hold the carpet in place?

  12. Genius! I had been thinking of having my back staircase carpeted with runner--and done professionally, but it's expensive. Now my mind is spinning and I feel like I could diy this with nailheads in addition to carpet tape to secure...WOW! Great idea.

  14. I second Sarah's question--are there super long nailhead tacks I don't know about? Most I've used wouldn't make it through broadloom more than enough to scratch the hell out of your floor.

  16. The trick to getting the nail heads to stay in the floor is to get a very low pile carpet. There is probably only 1/4" between the nail head and the floor here, so a 1/2" nail would be totally fine. I bet you could find even longer nails too.

  18. Love this look! But, question: If you wanted to pull up the carpet at some point what would you do about the tack holes? I'm always thinking about what to do when I change my mind . . .

    Thank you!
