New Shade for the GG Sconces

I had planned to get custom shades made for the Gossip Girl sconces, but every place I called wanted $60-$120 PER SHADE!! What?

So when I stumbled across these vintage chandelier shades at the Chelsea flea, I snatched them up for only a couple dollars.

The shades are sort of wrapped in silk cording, which gives them a super cool texture. I thought about dying them a fun color, but I actually like the more neutral gray-beige.

They have a floral, organic feel to them. My mom said they sort of look like mushrooms now with the new shades which I can totally see. I love them!

  3. They do look like mushrooms! I really like the combinations of colors of the doors, bookcase and the blue armchair. I'm no expert but to my taste if the shades were any more colorful perhaps it could overload the whole composition a little bit? I would leave them as they are. great find!

  5. You have styled the bookcases with great care - the color and gathered accessories work werll together. I agree with some earlier posters, if the shades were dyed there would be too much color competing.

Once again, you've sucessfully made graet style look easy - though we all know how much effort goes into each component. :)

  11. What a pretty view of your room. I love all the different colors working together. I am curious if you adapted the wiring yourself to plug in?

  13. Love the sconces - they look great! Random question, but do you know much about your gilt mirror - I found one almost identical to it at an estate sale and didn't know anything about it's history - era? etc?

  14. Hi Crystal!

When I had the sconces made, I asked them to be plug-in style. I also had them made shorter than the original sconces so they would fit that wall. I like the original size and the hard wire look much better, but at the end of the day, the sconces need to work for this wall. :)

  15. Hi Katie!

I don't know the maker of the mirror, but it's midcentury Regency style for sure.

They're not super rare, but still kind of special I think.

    Here's a post I did on mine:

  17. Sorry for this unrelated comment: That yellow door goes to your girls bedroom... But the wall doesn't go all the way up. Does that make it difficult to do anything after they go to bed? The noise level, I mean... I'm so curious about loft/Manhattan living :-)

  18. Hi Jenny. This is Emily from Cincinnati. I love how your space is coming together!! It reminds me of Kate Spade! Little hints of black, gold and green and lots of color! I love all the colors! Every detail is beautiful! I love your mix of cherished keepsakes, revived vintage pieces, and new trendy pieces. I'm very inspired! A few days ago I picked up the honeycomb mirror from pier one on clearance :) to use in my own space because I love how it looks in your house! Thanks for sharing all your great ideas and talent with us!!

  22. Ahhhh! The yellow door looks AMAZING!!! Its such a standout that I could barely think about the sconce shades (although I think they're perfect and just the subtlety needed between the bright blue chair and yellow door).

  23. The shades are a perfect complement to the things in that room. I love them.

And I have that exact mirror in my home! It was a castaway from my in laws a few years ago. They couldn't believe I wanted it. :)

  26. Your home is looking so beautiful and I love how there is an instructive and interesting blog post about every item.

It's really cool to look at that last photo and think, "oh yeah, I remember that great post on book case styling," and "oh, I also remember about the moldings on that yellow door." As someone else commented, the GG sconces alone have been a fun journey.

    Thanks for your inspiring blog!
