Hanging Chair?

Things are getting d.o.n.e. around here, friends. The navy chairs are gone, I ended up getting that pretty yellow settee off craigslist (it's GORGEOUS - I'll post about it later) and the gray sofa is getting donated to Housing Works today or Monday. Painting and moving projects will most likely happen this weekend. Awesome all around!

With the new seating arrangement there will be room for one biggish chair in the space. For about 2.5 seconds today I contemplated a hanging chair. I mean, look how cool and unexpected these are. I especially like them mixed with more traditional furnishings.

It's obviously not a perfect option for most homes, but I think it could be great in our loft. I also really like them in bedrooms. And of course a porch or a sun room would be an amazing place for these fun chairs.

Have any of you owned one of these hanging chairs? Here's what I'd like to know:
1) Do you have children?
2) Did said children break any bones as a direct result of the chair?
3) Did the ceiling hooks fall out? We have concrete rafters, so I think we could get a hook in there pretty securely, but still.

I'm keeping my options open, but in the meantime, I found a handful of these hanging chairs that would all be good options HERE. I think I'm partial to the rattan varieties.

HAPPY WEEKEND!!! xoxo

  2. I think those are so amazing, but very valid questions to ask before you invest in one. I hope you get some answer and can incorporate one into your room - I'd love to see it! Good luck! p.s. great photos!

  3. Jenny, we had one of these in my house growing up. It was very similar to the Patricia Halpin photo, but unpainted rattan. It hung on our screened-in porch. There were 3 of us kids, no one ever got hurt, it never fell out of the ceiling and we all loved it (so did all of our friends). I spent many an hour cuddled up in there reading. The sad part is when my brother and SIL bought and renovated our childhood home, my SIL insisted they take it down. Bummer! I say Go for it!

  4. I'm in love with this idea and am dying to do in my own home. I think the only thing that worries me is if the ceiling is strong enough to hold up...and for a very long time. Thanks for the resource link, too...I can't wait to see if you go for it or not!

  5. My two older sisters had the unpainted rattan ones in their bedrooms. no one ever got hurt and they never fell out of the ceiling- and trust me, i tried really hard to get myself hurt or to make them fall from the ceiling!!

  6. I love it. I want it. But, cannot see it in any house where a child will be for longer than 30 minutes. And, I have now graduated into grands, so I can't, now either. :(

  7. Love your blog! My family had an unpainted rattan hanging chair (very similar to the one pictured) on our screened-in porch in our mountain house. I had one sister and we never had any injuries. We loved it! I think ours was bolted into a beam that allowed it to spin around. The only caution I have is that if there is a wall close to the chair both the wall and the chair will get rather marked up.

  8. I remember in the late 70's I was a kid and my neighbor at the end of the block had one in their family room and I loooovvvveeeed it! I sat in it everytime I went over there. So to answer your question about whether to put one in your loft you should think, if you want your girls talking about their awesome chair when they are old like me then I say go for it!!!

  9. My friend had one in her house in the 80s. It was the favourite of all us. Us kids and their 3 kids never hurt themselves.

  10. I love these but I don't think I could ever have one in my home. They just don't seem practical and I don't see myself enjoying sitting in one. I bet the girls would love it though!

  11. It does bring flash backs from the 70s. My kids would of loved to have that. I do love all the rugs in your post. Bright, graphic colors. Love!

  12. I have the large hanging chair from Anthropologie in my boys (ages 7 and 9) bedroom. They NEVER use it!!! But it looks great! LOL! So no broken bones, and it has never fallen out.

As a side note, when I was growing up we had a swing tied to a tree branch and occasionally it would break with me on it! It only made my tailbone sore for a few days, so I wouldn't worry too much about your chair and broken bones. I have known kids to break their bones falling off a couch. I say go for it!

    Thanks doll,

  13. I had a hammock-style hanging chair in my teenage bedroom, and absolutely loved it. Never had problems with it falling out of the ceiling (even with three or four teenagers trying to sit in it at the same time), and younger cousins visiting had a blast without getting injured.

  14. I love a good hanging chair and have been contemplating the very same thing! I have a 14 month old so not much to worry about for a while. I think you can make it work by setting some ground rules, for example: "I know how much this chair looks like THE BEST indoor swing EVER but..." :)

  15. those chairs are so cool! we dont have hanging chairs in our house, but we do have a spin chair. the kids love to spin around. i can only imagine that the hanging chair would become a swing! how fun!!! x

  16. We have the IKEA chair in the finished room over our garage. I saw somewhere (HB?) that Jonathan Adler also has this chair. We love it -- great for the price. It's tied to a beam, so no risk of it falling. I don't have little kids, but a teen, who was the impetus behind its purchase (she wanted the bubble chair, but no dice!). No accidents -- we don't use the room much, but I'm not worried. It is a child's chair though: my 6 ft.+ husband can't use it due to the slope of the back of the chair.

  17. I laughed when I read that your question was about the kids breaking bones. My concern was about the kids breaking the chair-or anything else because they made the chair a swing! :)

  18. I love this idea. The photo with the swing brought back memories: My sister had a swing in her room when we were little. We had some of our best conversations with one of us rocking back an forth on the swing and the other sitting on the bed.
I like the idea of a hanging chair, it seems like it would be a great chair to relax in.

  19. I think hanging chairs outside can be great. Every summer we used to rent the same house at the beach that had a hanging deck chair. My sister and I were little (5 and 10) and we did not break any bones. We usually sat there and rocked back and forth, it was great. :)

  20. i bought a rattan one off craigslist this spring, and it's been hanging in our screened porch all summer. we have had no issues with it coming out of the ceiling (and we live in an old house!). we have had no safety issues regarding this chair with our energetic 4-year-old and 2-yr-old, which i was also a little concerned about. i have not regretted my purchase. this chair will definitely find a place in our next house! i also love the 70's vibe :)

  21. Jenny - I was on a quest for one for my daughters room. Check out Franswicker.com - model SWS02 $195. Love it - reminds me of the one I had in the late 70's early 80's.

  23. I love hanging chairs. In the 70's I also knew a family that had one. I am always trying to figure out where (or how) I cod out one in here...but alas..I can't. Have to move to do that! HAHA! Love THE SWING!

  24. I have been obsessed with that photo from the Domino archives for awhile now as well. I have a very similar bed and would love to do a striped rug with a hanging wicker chair. I loved reading all these answers! Makes me feel I should just go for it. Please do a post about it if you do - primarily how to secure it. :)

Also, couldn't get the resource link to work.

  25. We had one on my grandmother's back porch for all my growing up years. So much fun! No direct injuries (and we tried). My advice for you is to go sit in whatever chair you think you might want to buy, and sit there for at least 15 minutes. They are not all as comfortable as they look. Grandma's was great, but my neighbor had one that was pokey and no one ever wanted to sit in it very long.

  26. What great images - I especially love the one hanging by the window with the bookcase! I could see myself hanging out all weekend!

  27. oh.my.gosh how i love the swing in that front room! a hanging chair would be so wonderful, especially since soon (next few months) ill have a baby learning to walk by holding onto everything he can!

  28. we had a rattan hanging chair while growing up and the funnest thing to do was to spin it until it unscrewed from the ceiling, and fell on the floor. i think only once did i get whacked in the head by the heavy chain.

i also enjoyed reading in it. but we mostly swung it in big circles and did dangerous things. i blame it on my brother--you dont have boys so you should be okay.

  29. We had one in our sunroom growing up in the 80's and we loved it. It was so much a part of our childhood that I now have one for my young daughter to grow up with as well. Ours is hanging in our screen porch and bolted into a beam. Nobody ever got hurt and it never fell out of the ceiling but there are "rules" about playing in it:-)

  30. i've been thinking about it as well. i think i'm going to see if it works in my son's room. i like the idea of it becoming a little reading cocoon for the kids. with a bookshelf nearby and pillows scattered around underneath.

  31. Woah, you dont mess around! You move at lighting speed lady, I'm impressed and kinda jealous I cant get my act together like that. Cant WAIT to see what you have up your sleeve, as usual!

  32. I got a rattan swing chair off craigslist and put it in my girls' room. They are 3 and 5, and the rule is that it is a CHAIR not a SWING. (We have the ikea swing chair in the basement and that one gets used as a swing.) /no injuries, no problem with the ceiling hook--we put ours into a stud. I say: go for it!

  34. I love a hanging chair idea although my goal is to have a swing in my living room. If you get rattan, you can always paint it later to change the look. I think you should just go for it. Kids are going to break bones from jumping out of trees or falling out of hanging chairs - I wouldn't let that deter you, hahaha! I've never actually seen a hanging chair in someone's house and I think it would be a hit!

  35. I love hanging chairs! I wanted to check out the link where you found a bunch but it says that it can not be found when I click on it. Is there a way to give the address so I can look. Thank you.

  37. We have one in our Hamptons home. It has been hanging for three years. I have a cushion and a pillow in the swing and my children love to sit in the swing and read books. My husband and I sit in it too. It is supported by a beam, we've never had any injuries with our kids or guests and it is a fun design element. I have a 3 year old son and a 5 year old daughter, if that helps with figuring out the ages that are using it in our home. Go for it!

  38. Everything looks fabulous!

I think a hanging chair would be great and mostly because you are exactly the kind of person who can make it fun & aesthetically perfect!

  39. I made a hanging chair from a rattan chair for my porch and I love it http://www.indignantcorgi.com/2011/06/14/a-chair-rescue-and-revamp/
But I don't have kids, so can't help you there, and it ahs stayed pretty securly in the rafters!

love LGN! it's on the priority folder in my reader :)

  40. We've had a hanging chair for 15 years - no falls, many sweet naps for the kiddos. Only issue we had was visiting children using it as a swing - it would crash into anything close - lamps, walls, tables.

  41. you've inspired me. i'm now on the hunt for a fabulous hanging chair... Next step: convince my hubs to actually hang it.

  42. My friends have hanging chairs in their homes. Some even have a hanging chair from a stand, but I find it's too bulky. My kids are begging for it in their bedroom, and I worry about hanging it from the ceiling, but if it's installed just like a heavy chandelier, bolted and secure, I wouldn't worry.

I'm going for it (and I don't even have space in their rooms, but will move something out eventually) only because I want the kids to have this memory of how cool their bedroom was when they were little.

None of my friends' kids hurt themselves from it, and no, it never fell off the ceiling.

Do it, do it! And then show us! Thanks for the inspiration and the reminder that my "to-do" list in incomplete.

  43. These are all so awesome! I have a similar one in my living room so I HIGHLY recommend these- just make sure your beams can support it if you don't have a stand! I'm actually surprised Yellow Leaf Hammocks weren't featured on here- they make awesome hammock chairs! Worth checking out: www.facebook.com/yellowleafhammocks

  44. I had one of these in our house when I was growing up in elementary school. Loved it! When my parents weren't home, my friends and I used it as a swing and we went quite high as we had space. It was hung in a room with a cathedral ceiling. There was a sliding glass door behind it but we never crashed through lol. Just be sure you have lots of space as your kids will push the limits but I LOVED that chair. One of my favorite things about my childhood. Go for it!
