Make it Blue

When I asked my girls what color they wanted in their bedroom Claire's answer was "pink" and Gracie's was "purple," so naturally like any good mother would do, I'm painting their walls blue.

The room gets hardly any natural light so I'm feeling like we need a really cool color (cool as in opposite of warm) on the walls. Plus blue looks great with pinks and purples, so we'll be sure to incorporate their favorite colors too.

There's just something about the color blue in a feminine room. I really like it:








I left all my paint decks at a client's house, so I just picked up some paint samples when I was at Home Depot a couple days ago. I want a really clear blue - not a lot of brown or gray undertones.


Once the paint goes up, I'm thinking about getting artsy/crafty and doing a little mural. Something simple and only in white. I'm not going for a Chinoiserie look, but the idea is the same. White design on a colorful wall.




Mrs Blandings did an AMAZING job in her dining room. Did you see?


I'm thinking something charming and scenic. Flowers, trees, stars, maybe an NYC skyline.

When I asked Grace what she wanted her room to look like she said, "Just...hmmm...(sigh)...magical." :) love that girl.

    I love the images! I just painted my home office Martha Stewart Living Spring Melt. It's the softest pale blue, like Tiffany box blue toned down with white. I am so happy with it.

    Pretty. Behr has an ever so lovely blue color called "fresh day" and I love it. Have a magical monday.

    Jenny, try Sherwin Williams "Aviary Blue", it's perfect! (I've also used it half-strength on my ceilings in the dining room & bedroom)

    At our last house, we had our bedroom painted BM's Whispering Spring and I loved it. I felt so happy waking up to that color every morning. Miss it.

    Now I'm curious. Steering clear of a warm color in this instance seems counter-intuitive to me. Why choose a cool color for a low light setting?

    Love blue for a little girl's room. I have boys, but if I had a girl I would paint her room blue. As an aside, my boys rooms aren't blue. The second pic from your post with the blue, yellow, and lime green is my fav!

    that was my daughter exact answer as well "Pink!" So she's getting blue as well. Possibly just a whisper of blue- thinking Benjamin Moore's Glass Slipper.
    Cant wait to see what all you come up with for their rooms!

    I love the blues too. Did you decide against the sticker walls in their room then? I've been waiting to see if you try it and how it goes... I would love to do it on a wall in my playroom.

    For a low light room, try Behr "Reflecting Pool." I have never seen a color bounce so much light as that pale blue.

    My daughter also asked for purple. I can't face it. She agreed to pale blue as a compromise, but it won't match her curtains or bedding at all, so I may actually cave and do Ben Moore Wild Aster (pink) rather than replace all that linen!

    As a daughter of a mother with great taste like you, I still remember my mom asking me what color I wanted my room to be...an then doing something different. Of course it turned out great, but why did she ask me if it didn't matter? Made me feel unimportant and that my opinion didn't matter; just something to think about.

    So glad you think blue can be feminine too. My son's nursery is painted a silvery blue and I thought it could also work well in the future if our second child is a girl. Thanks for the inspiration pics!

    My favorite blue, light and true, is #1660 from Benjamin Moore. It used to be called "antique glassware", but seems it's going by "polar ice" these days. Looks great day and night.

    What pretty images of blue rooms! I especially love the one with the pops of yellow and lime green. My three boys have blue bedrooms and it is so easy to update with bolder colors as they get older and change their "favorites" - we are onto orange!

    Oh, my daughter has one wall in her bedroom painted Fairy Tale Blue by Benjamin Moore. I think she remembered it from when we lived in NYC, I had painted my room that color, so she picked it out for her room in CA. And it is a nice compliment to all of the other colors in her room and makes her yellow chandelier pop! Good luck picking a color!

    I love blue in little girl's rooms. I painted my two year olds nursery blue back when I was pregnant with her and people thought I was nuts. But I love it! it's my favorite room in the house!

    Good luck, I didn't have a sister, I can't imagine having to balance the pink/purple room dilemma. Seems like a great momma move to do blue. And the rooms aren't too girly. So you can keep it around for long. I love them

    My daughter's bedroom has been a cool blue (like your Behr sample) since she was a baby. Now that she's almost 10, plans are in the works for some hot pink!

    Love those blue rooms. What did you mean that since the room gets little natural light that the color should be cool rather than warm? I'd love to understand that concept.

    I think your idea using a light blue for your girls' room is fantastic! As a result of being lazy and not wanting to repaint, I kept the walls blue when we converted our office to my daughter's 'big girl room'. It was the best decision I ever made. The light blue looks amazing with pops of hot pink. I used Glidden's "Fountain Mist".
