This weekend my brothers and sisters and their families have been together at my parent's home in Snowflake, Arizona. After we were all burnt out from the lake, we decided to take a little day trip to Gray's Rock Shop in Holbrook near the Petrified Wood Forest. It was the coolest place, full of the most incredible gems and rocks. Mother Nature really knows how to put together a color palette!
I loved these crystals that looked like a cityscape.
Wearstler-esque petrified wood stump chair and gorgeous mollusk fossils.
The shop had the most beautiful agate all over the place. This little bowl was full of pieces already banded in gold and ready for stringing on a chain.
I wanted these petrified wood bookends so, so bad!
Malachite boxes and trinkets were everywhere!
They also had an awesome selection of brass and acrylic pieces for displaying your rocks. I liked these petal-shaped ones.
The girls helped me pick out this pretty piece of petrified wood and the minty green crystal to take home with us to NYC next week. I'm so crazy about the colors! And aren't the brass and acrylic stands great? It will be fun to have little souvenirs of this trip and reminders of our old home in our new home.
PS Did you know petrified wood is estimated to be between 50 and 200 million years old! Amazing.
Those are all amazing.
ReplyDeleteThey are all so beautiful. I know I'd have a difficult time picking from all the choices.
ReplyDeleteI find rocks and petrified ANYTHING to be so darn cool! I wish they would spring to life and tell everyone what they've seen. Historical.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful! Boy could you buy these and resell them online! I think they're covetable!

ahhhh that last piece of AZ Petrified Wood is AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteMy parents took my siblings and me to the Petrified Wood Forest years ago. I thought it was actually going to be a forest with some petrified wood here and there (ha!) but was surprised to find that it was far more beautiful and interesting. One day, I'm taking my family there!
ReplyDeleteYour pieces are lovely; I wanted to buy the whole shop up!
I had no idea you were from Snowflake. I grew up in St. Johns and my grandparents lived in Taylor. We use to go there ever Sunday to eat family dinner together. Of course I also played against the mighty Lobos in sports as well. I love your blog and now I love it even more. Its like a little piece of small town heaven that I know.
ReplyDeleteWow! That petrified wood is so colorful! Who would have thought wood would turn all of those colors
ReplyDeleteWow what an amazing place! Great finds to bring home to NYC
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I want to make a trip to Arizona JUST to go there.
ReplyDeleteI saw Sabrina Soto's assistant on the High Low project make a DIY version of those petrified bookends recently. He cut them out of logs, painted on the colorful petrified finish and then coated them in epoxy resin for shine. They came out pretty close to the originals. In case you want to go the DIY route :)
ReplyDeleteSo funny! We drove from CO to CA last summer and stopped in the Petrified Forest. I'm pretty sure I was in that exact same gift shop (well, there are two right across the road from each other, and we went in both, so I think I saw all the same merchandise!) My son picked out an amazing piece of petrified rock, which has migrated from his room to my living room bookshelves! I also scored a "handmade" (who really knows?) Pueblo turquoise basket that holds our keys on our console table. It really is beautiful there!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd go nuts in that place! I love rocks and gems. Those petrified wood bookends are incredible. The ones that look like a cityscape are called ulexite, nicknamed TV rock. They have fiber optic qualities and "project" images underneath to their surface. Really cool.
ReplyDeleteOMG- I love the piece that your chose it is gorgeous, I can't wait to see how you display it!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE petrified wood. Those pieces are gorgeous. I so remember going to those kinds of shops as a young girl. So fun. And...I didn't know your parents are in Snowflake! I lived there until I was 10 years old. Can't wait to catch up soon.
ReplyDeleteFunny. My family and I went to check out the petrified forest in Calistoga (Napa Valley) this weekend too. Amazing what mother nature can do!
ReplyDeleteMy dad worked for the National Park Service and I lived IN the Petrified Forest (first the south end and then the north end) for the first seven years of my life. There are no schools in the park, so I had to ride the bus to Holbrook for school. I have lived in Geogia for three times the amount of time I spent in Arizona, but my heart will always belong to the desert there. It marks you! I loved looking at your photos today- thanks for reminding me of some of my favorite memories!
ReplyDeleteIf only I could convince my parents to give me one of their several sets of bookends! They have one set where each piece is over a foot tall!!!
If I lived anywhere near Arizona I'd be in my car on the way to this place right now- amazing!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love malaquita box!
ReplyDeleteLovely blog, you have so much talent. Can't wait to see your new place in NY.
ReplyDeleteI am a paleontologist and appreciate fossils and any fossil organism be it from a tree, a leaf, an invertebrate or mammal. Those molluscs are ammonites and in Argentina, Patagonia are found very large as large as a big car.
I love the bright multi-colored pieces of pterified wood but those colors can't possibly be natural. How do they do that?
ReplyDeleteI love all the rocks, but you had me at Snowflake. That movie Fire in the Sky was wild! I bet you have some stories.
ReplyDeleteThis store would be heaven for me! I have loved rocks and crystals since I was a little girl with my rock collection. I love decorating with rocks and I have them scattered all over my house. A few weeks ago on The HIgh/Low Project they re-created petrified wood bookends and they turned out pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHi. Yes, the colors in the Arizona petrified wood are natura.
