Another Lady Portrait

Art is definitely one of those subjective things. Something that speaks to me might not be your bag. When I brought home this portrait from the flea market a few months ago, Heather was not a big fan (I think she likes it more now). I love it though. I'm fascinated by more abstract portraiture and I love the colors of this one.

The vendor who sold me this painting had a lot of pieces from the estate of a Connecticut artist named Lucy Baker. This portrait though was not one of her works, but was a trade from one of her artist friends, Thomas Barron. He wrote a little note saying so on the back.

I had her hanging in our bedroom for a while and I think I preferred her in there. But the electric grape color of her shirt just looks so pretty with the chartreuse console table, it seemed a shame to keep her hidden away, even though there's a much grander dame in the room already. :)

Oh! And by the way, I went back to Home Depot this week to find out the paint color of the console. It's "Citronette" from the Home Decorator's Collection line from BEHR.

  1. It looks great with all your other art and this gives you an idea of the actual size.

  4. Jenny, abstract art is my fave! I absolutely would have picked up this lovely, too! And that bench underneath the console is still one of my all-time favorite pieces of yours. xoxo, G

  6. I find it difficult to pick art. I'll find something I like but my husband rarely likes it as much as I do so it never makes it home. Do you and your husband share the same taste in art? Or do you get free reign in that area?

  7. I love her Jenny. I'd love to hear your answer to Jen @ Rambling Renovators questions.

P.S. Your console color looks more vivid and chartruese than the paint swatch on HD's website. Is that just because I have a hard time evisioning paint off the swatch and onto a real/large surface? Or is is just the photography?

  10. I'm a big fan of the new lady, and an even bigger fan of the piece right below her. Care to share where you got it (and the odds of me securing a similar one)?? :)

    Thanks!

  14. Jen - My husband and I share pretty similar tastes, and I would say he is pretty laid back about letting me put whatever I want in the house. BUT we have a rule in our marriage that whichever one of us cares more about something, or should have the right to care the most about something, gets the trump card. And the other hands over the control of the choice willingly and happily. I think that is one of the reasons we hardly ever fight. Michael knows that I love interior design and that it's my job, so he holds his tongue and supports me when I buy leopard silk velvet on ebay for our office chairs. He has a million instruments that take up a ton of space, but I know he loves music and I love him more than I love having that extra living or storage space in our homes over the years. This is just the house stuff, we do this in all aspects of our marriage from paying bills, investing, grocery shopping, traveling, etc.

Anyway, I know that is sort of an extreme approach, but I think if you come across a piece of art that you really love, you should ask you husband for some leeway. Maybe he can have free reign on the next art choice? I do that with clients a lot of times. The wife gets to pick her favorite rug if the husband gets the leather sofa, etc, etc.

    xoxo

  15. Crystal - the color on the website is much darker than it is in real life. The color in my photos is spot on. It is super bright and clear. I love it!

  16. Kristina - The black, white and yellow line drawing is from the same artist who did the music abstract I hung over the kitchen cut out. I need to look again, but I think his name is Paul Evans or Paul Andersen. Glad to hear you like it too! I like that the yellow is so subtle and it sort of sneaks up on you when you get a closer look :)

  18. Hi Jenny, I've also been secretly coveting the black and white geometric that peeks into quite a few of your living room pictures. I even took a screen shot and tried to see if art.com could match it! Thanks for the tip on the artist.

  20. I work at a museum, and our curators always say to look at the back of a painting if you're doing research on it. You never know!

Love the secret note on the back- thanks for sharing.

  22. Like Kristina, I also notice that incredible black and white drawing / painting every time you post your art wall. Wish I could find a print or similar piece online!

  27. Sorry to change the subject, but I'm drooling over that braided rug. Have you talked about it before? What fiber is it and where can I get one?
    Thanks Jenny!

  29. HA! I figured that was the color and went to HD to find a color swatch. All they had was the brochure with all the color swatches from that line, and they're tiny. Did you have the color match done from that teeny swatch?

I so appreciate hearing from you. Nice comments make my day! Thanks for keeping things light here, friends! :)
